On a steep trail, slow down and take short, deliberate steps so you can place each foot securely. Walk downhill—never run—and change your route or turn back if the ground or conditions are beyond your ability. Technique can help you keep your balance, but it cannot make unsafe terrain safe.

How to hike uphill without slipping

Choose a pace that lets you look ahead and place your feet deliberately rather than reaching for the next step. On uphill or sandy ground, a National Park Service field-monitoring protocol suggests leaning slightly forward, shortening your stride, turning your feet outward, and using as much of the inside of each foot as practical. That is advice from a specific field protocol, not a rule for every surface or every hiker; adjust to the ground and stop if you cannot find secure footing. National Park Service field-monitoring protocol

How to walk downhill on a steep trail

Shorten your steps and check each landing before transferring your weight. The NPS field protocol advises walking rather than running downhill, bending the knees, and—on slippery or loose ground—keeping most weight toward the heels while leaning slightly backward. Treat those posture cues as context-specific suggestions, not a guarantee of traction: if the surface is too unstable to control each step, do not press on simply because you are using the recommended stance. On steep traverses, look ahead for possible landing areas and keep one hand free where it could help on rocky ground. National Park Service field-monitoring protocol

Move deliberately over loose or exposed terrain

Pause to assess loose rock, sand, mud, and other unstable surfaces before committing to a step. The National Park Service backcountry safety guidance recommends moving slowly across steep areas, checking footholds, and using solid rocks or trees as handholds when appropriate. Avoid known hazards where possible. Do not grab something unless it is solid, and do not treat a handhold as a reason to enter terrain you cannot safely cross. If footing is unreliable or a fall could have serious consequences, use a safer route or turn back. National Park Service backcountry safety

Choose footwear and poles for the conditions

Mount Rainier National Park recommends sturdy footwear with non-slip tread and ankle support. That is park guidance, not a promise against slips or ankle injuries; fit, the trail surface, and current conditions still matter. Mount Rainier National Park hiking safety

Trekking poles may help with balance in some terrain and crossing situations, and NPS backcountry material mentions them as a stability aid. They do not guarantee you will avoid a fall or make a hazardous slope safe. Use them only if they help you move with control, and keep a hand free when loose rock or exposure makes that useful. Yield carefully and follow local trail signs

As a general guideline, NPS hiking etiquette gives uphill hikers the right of way; follow posted signs because local rules may differ. When yielding to pack stock, NPS advises stepping calmly off the trail to the downhill side. Otherwise, stay on the trail, stepping aside only when needed to yield. Know when to change plans

Reassess the route as conditions change. A trail that felt manageable on the way up may be difficult to descend, and wet or loose ground can make footholds less reliable. Mount Rainier National Park advises against attempting stream crossings that appear unsafe or exceed your skill level. A stream crossing is not the same as a steep trail, but the decision principle applies: do not let the itinerary outweigh a clear safety concern. Check current local trail conditions and closures, and choose a safer route or turn back when you cannot move securely. Mount Rainier National Park hiking safety
