Start with the control scheme that feels familiar, scan unfamiliar objects and enemies for clues, and use lock-on with directional dodges while you learn combat timing. Those habits make it easier to explore Viewros, understand what blocks your path, and use Samus’s abilities effectively.
Choose a control scheme that suits you
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is available for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Its Switch 2 edition offers three control approaches: Dual Stick Fusion, Pointer Fusion, and mouse control with the right Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s Switch 2 edition page describes the options. The mouse feature is specific to Joy-Con 2; do not expect it on the original Switch.
- Dual Stick Fusion: Use the analogue sticks for movement and aiming. It is the straightforward starting point if you are used to modern console shooters.
- Pointer Fusion: Move with the left stick and aim using motion controls. Try it if you prefer gyro-style aiming.
- Mouse controls: Place the right Joy-Con 2 on a surface to aim with mouse-like movement. This option is for Nintendo Switch 2.
There is no universally best option in the available documentation. Begin with the scheme you already understand, then adjust sensitivity or remap controls if aiming or movement feels awkward. Button assignments vary by scheme, and a version 1.0 community control guide says most controls can be remapped; see the GameFAQs controls guide for its listed mappings.
Scan when you need a clue
Use the Scan Visor on stone statues, ruins, outlined interactables, and unfamiliar enemies. Nintendo’s game description specifically points players to scanning statues and ruins for clues about how to advance. Scanning is also useful for understanding the world: a Tom’s Guide review describes scan information about creatures, plants, and structures, and says scans can offer hints for boss encounters.

A practical rule: if you do not know what a device does, what an unfamiliar enemy can do, or how to approach a boss, scan before guessing. Scan entries also contribute to the game’s collectible and worldbuilding material, but that does not mean every object must be scanned to progress.
Use lock-on to learn enemy timing
A reviewer reports that the left trigger locks on to enemies and supports dodging in four directions. While learning an enemy, lock on so you can keep it in view, watch for its attack, and dodge directionally rather than standing still. Scan a new enemy before committing to a tactic when possible. The information may reveal useful context or a boss hint, helping you decide whether to prioritize movement, a weapon, or an ability.
Put psychic abilities to work in and out of combat
Psychic abilities are not only exploration keys. Nintendo says they let Samus operate mechanisms and steer charged shots, opening areas that were previously inaccessible. The official game page describes their role in clearing a path. When a charged shot or mechanism seems to call for more precise control, consider whether a psychic ability is intended to guide it; the same capability can matter in some fights.

Morph Ball changes how Samus moves through the environment and is used for puzzles and doors, according to the Tom’s Guide review. If a route appears blocked, check whether the room has a Morph Ball-sized passage or puzzle rather than assuming the path is closed.
Revisit routes as your toolkit grows
The central objective is to explore Viewros and find a way home, using scans to interpret ruins, combat to deal with alien creatures, and abilities to move forward. When a new ability becomes available, it is worth reconsidering earlier routes and mechanisms that you could not use before. This is a genre-informed exploration tip, not a guarantee that every old area will contain a newly accessible path.

Nintendo describes Vi-O-La as a motorcycle for traversal and open-area combat. Treat it as part of the broader exploration toolkit rather than as a replacement for scanning or learning enemy patterns.

Nintendo Support lists software update Ver. 1.1.0, released December 3, 2025, with Hard-mode enemy adjustments and gameplay fixes. That was the newest version shown on the linked support page; update history can change, so check Nintendo’s update instructions and history for current information.
For Switch 2, Nintendo Australia lists Quality and Performance display modes, with output dependent on mode, play style, and a display that supports the selected setting. The listed figures are docked 4K/60 or 1080p/120, and handheld or tabletop 1080p/60 or 720p/120; see the regional edition page for its conditions.
