Open the right app first
Sennheiser identifies Smart Control Plus as the app for the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. The product manual says the app is needed to make full use of the headphones’ settings and functions. Start there before adjusting sound or behavior. Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 5 Wireless product page and support pages provide the official product and setup information.
Set ANC and Transparency for your surroundings
Use ANC when reducing background noise is the priority; choose Transparency when you need to hear ambient sounds, announcements, or a conversation. These are situational choices rather than sound-quality presets. The manual describes switching modes with a double tap on the touchpad and adjusting the balance of ANC and Transparency with a pinch gesture. Try Adaptive ANC first
The manual says Adaptive ANC automatically reduces noise depending on conditions and is on by default. Leave it enabled for an initial trial, then adjust if you prefer a different behavior.

Adjust wind handling only if needed
If wind or movement noise is distracting, compare Wind Noise Reduction’s Auto setting with Off or Max. The manual lists Auto as the default; which setting you prefer depends on the situation.
Choose one sound-customization route
Smart Control Plus offers two distinct approaches: guided Sound Personalization and a graphical equalizer for direct frequency adjustments. Sennheiser says the MOMENTUM 5 has an 8-band EQ, and that EQ and Sound Personalization cannot be active at the same time. Choose one to start: Sound Personalization if you prefer a guided process, or the EQ if you want to adjust frequencies yourself. Neither is documented as a universally best-sounding option. Decide what happens at full Transparency
In Smart Control Plus, “Pause on full transparency” determines whether audio pauses at maximum Transparency or continues mixed with ambient sound. Sennheiser documents pausing as the default. If you want to keep listening while hearing your surroundings, change the behavior; otherwise, leave the default in place. Sennheiser support
Check codec compatibility before troubleshooting sound
Sennheiser lists aptX Lossless support, but a setting alone cannot make an incompatible source device use that codec. Check that your playback device supports a compatible codec before expecting a codec-related change to affect the audio path. Sennheiser also identifies the BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter as an option for enabling aptX when a source device does not support it; it is optional, not a prerequisite for adjusting the headphones’ main settings.
