If Claude is unavailable where you live, choose a coding assistant only after confirming that the issue is country eligibility—not an account restriction, network problem, or temporary service issue. Then match a replacement to your IDE and workflow: inline code suggestions, conversational help, or an agent that handles multi-step tasks. Check country and account eligibility, feature support, and current plan terms before paying or moving a repository.
First, confirm why Claude is unavailable
Check Anthropic’s current list of supported countries and regions. Its Help Center page is dated March 16, 2026. If your location is listed but you still cannot use Claude, the country list alone does not explain the problem: account policy, network access, or a temporary service issue may be involved.
Availability can change, and the country where you work may not be the only eligibility factor. Confirm current country and plan rules directly with the provider before subscribing or transferring code.
What can I use instead of Claude for coding if Claude isn’t available in my country?
Start with the kind of help you need, rather than an abstract model ranking. Inline autocomplete inside an editor, chat about a selected function, and an agent working through several steps are different workflows. The options below suit different needs; none is established here as universally faster or more accurate.
#1 Best Overall
| Option | Consider it if | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | You want suggestions integrated into an existing editor and GitHub workflow. | Editor support varies by feature: inline suggestions cover a range of editors, while GitHub says chat is currently available only in VS Code, JetBrains, and Visual Studio. Review generated code for correctness and security. |
| OpenAI Codex | You want an agent for writing, reviewing, or shipping code, with desktop, CLI, IDE extension, or web entry points. | Check your account plan, rollout status, workspace permissions, and whether you need a local workflow or Codex Cloud. Cloud eligibility is narrower and can depend on workspace settings. |
| Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise | You work in an eligible Google Cloud organization and need IDE assistance or organizational controls. | Google ended consumer Gemini Code Assist IDE extension and Gemini CLI requests for individual, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra tiers on June 18, 2026. Google says Standard and Enterprise subscriptions remain unchanged. Confirm your subscription and applicable migration route. |
| Antigravity | You used the affected consumer Gemini Code Assist or Gemini CLI offering and are considering Google’s migration direction. | Check its current country availability, features, quotas, and subscription terms. The available information does not establish country-by-country access. |
See GitHub’s Copilot feature information and FAQ, OpenAI’s Codex plan guidance and Codex access details, and Google’s Gemini Code Assist overview and release notes for the relevant features and plan conditions.
Which AI coding assistant works in my IDE and region?
Verify both questions for the exact feature you intend to use. A provider may support one editor feature but not another, and a product’s availability in one country or subscription does not establish access to a separate product from the same company.
Rank #2
- Editor and feature: Look up your IDE and whether the provider supports autocomplete, chat, or agent features there. Do not infer chat support from inline-completion support.
- Country and account: Check the provider’s current country list, account eligibility, plan, and any organization or workspace restrictions.
- Task style: Decide whether you need a short completion, an explanation or edit through chat, or an agent that can coordinate multi-step work.
- Execution and data: Find out whether work runs locally or is delegated to cloud services, what code or context is shared, and which controls apply to your account.
- Organization requirements: Check private-repository policy, administrative controls, and any workplace rules before using proprietary code.
- Limits and cost: Verify current pricing, quotas, and usage limits on the provider’s own pages; these terms can change.
- Switching effort: Consider editor setup, account provisioning, team policy, and how you will review changes before moving a project.
How to choose and try a replacement safely
- Check the Claude country list. Use Anthropic’s supported-country page, then distinguish country eligibility from account, network, or service issues.
- Write down your workflow. Name your IDE and programming languages, then decide whether you need inline completion, code chat, or multi-step agent work.
- Make a feature-specific shortlist. Investigate Copilot for editor-native suggestions, Codex for agent workflows, and Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise for eligible organization use. Treat Antigravity as Google’s stated migration direction for affected consumer users, not as a universally available substitute.
- Confirm access before committing. Check current country, account, plan, editor, and workspace eligibility on official pages before entering payment details or moving a repository.
- Run a small, non-sensitive trial. Use a representative task that does not expose proprietary code unless your organization permits it. Review the diff, run tests and relevant security checks, and verify data settings and workplace policy.
Review generated code, even when it looks plausible
These tools can produce code that appears reasonable but is incorrect or insecure. Google’s Gemini Code Assist guidance says: “As an early-stage technology, Gemini Code Assist can generate output that seems plausible but is factually incorrect. We recommend that you validate all output from Gemini Code Assist before you use it.” GitHub’s Copilot FAQ warns: “Public code may contain insecure coding patterns, bugs, or references to outdated APIs or idioms.”
Review changes as you would another contributor’s patch: inspect the diff, check behavior against requirements, run tests, and use appropriate security checks. Do not submit proprietary code until you have checked your employer’s rules and the provider’s applicable data controls. For Codex, OpenAI distinguishes local workflows from cloud tasks and documents plan-dependent behavior and controls; check the current guidance for your account at OpenAI’s Codex plan information.

Do not use broad availability figures as proof
Google says its Gemini web app is available in over 230 countries and territories and supports more than 70 languages, according to its Gemini web app availability page accessed in 2026. Those figures describe the web app—not Gemini Code Assist or Antigravity—and do not establish that a coding assistant is available in your country. Google also notes that mobile availability differs.
