In the Milky Way, researchers can often identify the stars individually and map their statistical overdensity. Around more distant galaxies, the stars blend together, so astronomers search deep images for extended, low-contrast arcs, tails and other structures.
What astronomers mean by a tidal stream
A tidal stream is debris stretched out as gravity disrupts a smaller system, such as a star cluster or dwarf galaxy, orbiting a more massive one. The debris can trace a long, narrow structure, but it is not necessarily a bright, sharply bounded object. Its stars or light may be spread over such a large area that the stream is faint compared with the sky behind it.
The practical search depends on distance: nearby stars can be resolved and counted; in more distant galaxies, the stream is usually detected as blended light.
How searches find streams in the Milky Way
Select likely member stars
In a resolved-star search, a survey measures point sources in multiple optical bands. Astronomers use a color–magnitude matched filter to give more weight to objects whose colors and brightness fit an expected stellar population, often represented by an isochrone. An isochrone describes the expected positions of stars of a particular age and composition on a color–brightness diagram.

This selection does not prove that each chosen star belongs to a stream. It reduces the contribution from unrelated foreground stars and background galaxies, making a genuine concentration easier to see statistically.
Map the overdensity and check its shape
Researchers plot the selected stars across the sky and look for a long, coherent overdensity against the remaining foreground and background. A candidate that forms a continuous, narrow track is more compelling than an isolated patch, though follow-up measurements may be needed to test whether its stars share a common motion or distance.

In a 2018 analysis of Dark Energy Survey (DES) data, Shipp and colleagues used a synthetic isochrone for an old, metal-poor population. Their dataset covered about 5,000 square degrees, reached g > 23.5, and had relative photometric calibration uncertainty below 1%. The team reported 11 new stellar streams and recovered four previously known thin streams, with a possible extension of another. The analysis described sensitivity to stream stars out to roughly 50 kpc in heliocentric distance. These are results and characteristics of that survey and method, not guaranteed performance for other datasets. Read the DES study.
How searches find streams around more distant galaxies
Look for blended, low-surface-brightness light
Beyond the Local Group, the imaging considered in the cited studies generally cannot resolve individual stream stars. Instead, their combined light appears as an extended, faint feature around a host galaxy. Astronomers examine deep, wide-field images for arcs, tails, shells and other diffuse structures, using processing intended to preserve extended light while reducing the effects of bright foreground objects and background gradients.

Search methods include visual inspection, surface-brightness maps and inspection of images showing pixel counts. A 2018 study using enhanced Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging described post-processing optimized for low-surface-brightness structure and visual classification. At a limiting surface brightness of 28 mag arcsec−2, it reported likely merger-related diffuse features in 14% of its particular study sample. That fraction depends on the sample, image processing and classification used; it is not a universal rate for nearby galaxies. Read the SDSS Local Volume study.
Use deep survey images, then assess candidates
The Stellar Stream Legacy Survey used images from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys to examine a large sample of nearby galaxies. Its 2023 proof-of-concept report covered about 3,100 galaxies, including about 940 Milky Way analogues, and described imaging reaching as faint as about 29 mag arcsec−2 in the r band. It reported 24 new stream detections. Those figures describe that survey’s sample, imaging and report, not a general detection threshold or rate. Read the Stellar Stream Legacy Survey report.

Why faint streams are easy to miss
- Low contrast: Stream light is spread across a large area, so it can be much fainter per unit area than the surrounding sky.
- Sky background and scattered light: Errors in modeling background illumination can hide diffuse structure or create apparent features. A 2018 LSST white paper discusses minimizing scattered light as part of a proposed observing strategy for external galaxies beyond 20 Mpc, where individual stars are unresolved; it should not be read as a report of present-day survey performance. - Pixel scale and correlated noise: Image sampling and noise patterns affect how detectable a feature is. A limit measured at pixel level may not reflect how clearly a stream can be seen across the full image.
- Contamination in star catalogs: In the Milky Way, unrelated stars and galaxies dilute the signal, which is why color–magnitude selection helps.
- Ambiguous shapes and classifications: A visual candidate may be difficult to distinguish from a shell, tail or other diffuse feature. Studies may classify these structures differently, complicating comparisons.
Why a single image-depth number does not settle the comparison
A quoted surface-brightness limit describes an image under a particular measurement method; it is not a universal line below which every stream disappears or above which every stream is detectable. Whether a structure stands out also depends on its shape and angular size, the sky area surveyed, the host galaxy and the method used to identify candidates.
A 2025 study comparing extragalactic stellar streams with simulations highlights the effects of pixel size, how surface-brightness limits are calculated, inspection methods and definitions of streams, shells and tails. For a meaningful comparison between surveys, consider the complete observing and analysis context:
- Whether the search resolves individual stars or detects integrated diffuse light.
- The surveyed sky area and the distance range involved.
- The filter bands and, for matched filters, the assumed stellar population.
- How the surface-brightness limit was measured and what pixel scale was used.
- How sky background, scattered light and correlated noise were handled.
- How candidates were identified and whether they received follow-up confirmation.
- How the study defines and classifies streams, shells and tails.
How to read a claimed stream detection
A faint feature in an image is a candidate, not automatically a confirmed stream. To judge what a study has established, check how it selected and classified the feature, what image processing was applied, and whether the authors report supporting evidence beyond appearance. Keep each study’s limit, sample and reported detection count tied to its own methods rather than treating those values as directly interchangeable.
