To screen for a conventional death cross, look for the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) crossing below the 200-day SMA. Then use a technical alert to monitor that moving-average relationship, or a separate price alert to watch a particular price level. The two alerts track different conditions, and neither predicts what a stock will do next.

What a death cross means

A death cross is a shorter-term moving average crossing below a longer-term moving average. The widely used example is the 50-day SMA crossing below the 200-day SMA. These periods are conventions, not fixed requirements; changing the periods or using exponential moving averages (EMAs) instead changes the condition. Nasdaq defines the death cross as a technical-chart pattern, while TradingView’s moving-average documentation explains the indicator’s characteristics.

A moving average is calculated from past prices, so a crossover describes a relationship that has already formed. TradingView characterizes moving averages as lagging indicators used for interpretation and confirmation rather than prediction. A death cross is therefore not, by itself, evidence that a stock will keep falling or a reason to sell.

How to screen for death-cross stocks

  1. Choose the definition. For the conventional screen, specify a 50-day SMA crossing below a 200-day SMA. Keep the average type and both periods explicit so that a screen using EMAs or other periods is not mistaken for the same condition.
  2. Set the stock universe. In your screener, select the market or exchange and any other scope you want to consider. Results only cover the symbols included in that universe.
  3. Look for a technical crossover filter. Add a moving-average crossover condition if the screener provides one. TradingView’s Stock Screener documentation describes technical filters and signals, including moving averages and crossovers. Its filter instructions explain how to apply available conditions to symbols. Available fields and labels can vary; confirm that the selected filter represents the periods, average type, and direction you intend to screen.
  4. Review the matches as a shortlist. A screener identifies symbols meeting its configured condition; it does not establish that a trade is suitable or that the price will continue lower. Check each chart and other information relevant to your decision.
  5. Move symbols you want to follow into a watchlist. Confirm which symbols are in the list before applying an alert to it, because the watchlist determines the alert’s coverage.

Choose the alert that matches what you want to monitor

A technical alert tracks an indicator condition, such as one moving average crossing another. A price alert tracks a price threshold. A stock’s price crossing a chosen level is not the same event as its 50-day average crossing below its 200-day average.

What you want to monitor Alert type Example What it does not tell you
A moving-average relationship Technical or indicator alert Short moving average crosses down through a longer moving average It depends on the chosen indicator, interval, and the platform’s alert implementation; it does not predict subsequent prices.
A particular price level Price alert Price crosses down through a selected threshold It does not detect the death-cross condition itself.
The same supported condition across selected stocks Watchlist alert Apply a technical condition to a watchlist It covers the symbols in that list, not every stock in the market.

TradingView’s technical-alert guide covers alerts on indicators and other technical conditions. For multiple symbols, its watchlist-alert documentation describes applying a condition across a watchlist. Feature availability and interface details can vary by platform, market, account, or device, so verify the options available to you.

Set and check the alert

  1. Select the symbol or watchlist. For a single-stock alert, confirm the symbol. For a watchlist alert, review its membership and make sure it contains the stocks you intend to monitor.
  2. Choose the condition. Select a technical or indicator condition for a moving-average crossover. If your goal is to be notified at a price, select a price condition and enter the threshold instead. TradingView’s price-alert documentation describes operators including crossing, crossing up or down, greater than, and less than.
  3. Set the trigger frequency and expiration. Decide how often the condition may trigger and when the alert should stop. TradingView’s alert configuration guide describes these settings. It states that open-ended alerts are not available for watchlist alerts.
  4. Choose a message and delivery method, then save. Check the alert’s status afterward and confirm that notifications are delivered through the method you selected.
  5. Recheck coverage over time. A changed watchlist changes which symbols are covered. TradingView also documents a limited-functionality state in which calculations may halt for affected symbols even while an alert continues for unaffected symbols. Review its explanation of limited functionality and do not assume every symbol is being calculated continuously.

What an alert can and cannot establish

  • A crossover alert can notify you when the configured moving-average condition is met under the platform’s chosen settings.
  • A price alert can notify you when a selected price operator and threshold are met; it does not confirm a moving-average crossover.
  • A watchlist alert extends a supported condition to the symbols in a particular list, whose membership and alert status affect coverage.
  • None of these alerts proves that a stock is a good or bad investment, or forecasts its next move. Use the notification as a prompt to review the chart and your broader decision criteria.
