Adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) reduces some outside sound by using microphones and processing to create opposing sound waves. Transparency mode does the reverse: it captures outside sound and plays it through the headphones so you can hear your surroundings. Adaptive features automatically adjust cancellation, ambient sound, or the balance between them as conditions change. None of these modes guarantees silence, and their performance also depends on headphone design and fit.
How does active noise cancellation work?
Microphones pick up sound around the headphones. Digital processing uses that signal to drive the speakers with an opposing signal, often called anti-noise. Where the two sounds meet near your ear, they can partly reduce one another. ANC is an electronic layer; it does not create a vacuum or erase every outside sound. The manufacturer explanations cited here do not provide comparable cancellation measurements across products.
ANC works alongside passive isolation. Ear cups, cushions, and ear tips physically block some sound before the electronics process what remains. For example, Bang & Olufsen says the memory foam and leather ear pads on its Beocom Portal help block high-frequency sound. Apple likewise says AirPods Pro ANC works best with a good fit and seal.
Feed-forward and feedback ANC
Some headphones use different microphones for different parts of the cancellation process. In Bang & Olufsen’s product-specific description of the Beocom Portal, outward-facing microphones measure incoming ambient sound for feed-forward ANC, while internal microphones sense sound from the speaker and some ambient noise for feedback ANC. The headphones combine these approaches in a hybrid arrangement. This is an example of one product’s design, not a universal blueprint for all headphones.

What does transparency mode do?
Transparency mode uses microphones to capture surrounding sound and reproduce it through the headphones. This lets you hear people or other activity around you without removing the headphones. The microphone arrangement and signal processing vary by model, so the term describes the listening result rather than one standard circuit design. Apple’s AirPods support guide describes ANC and Transparency controls for supported models.
What makes noise cancellation or ambient sound adaptive?
“Adaptive” does not mean the same thing in every product. A system may alter cancellation as background noise changes, adjust how much outside sound comes through, or combine both behaviors. The name alone does not tell you exactly which settings change or how quickly.

- Apple Adaptive Audio: Apple describes a mode that blends ANC and Transparency in response to changing noise conditions. Users can adjust how much ambient sound is allowed, and availability depends on AirPods model and software. See Apple’s Adaptive Audio guide.
- Bang & Olufsen Beocom Portal: The company says its adaptive ANC analyzes the surroundings and selects a suitable cancellation algorithm as background noise changes. Its explanation is specific to that headset. See Bang & Olufsen’s Beocom Portal support article.
- Sony WH-1000XM6: In its May 16, 2025 announcement, Sony described Auto Ambient Sound as adjusting in real time to balance music and outside sound, and Adaptive NC Optimiser as adjusting noise cancellation. Sony also listed 12 microphones, 1.5 times the number in the WH-1000XM5. Those are Sony’s product specifications and claims, not independent measures of effectiveness. See Sony’s announcement.
Why can fit and microphone condition change the experience?
Fit and seal
A loose earbud tip or poor cushion seal can weaken passive isolation and affect how well ANC works. Apple recommends a good seal for AirPods Pro and offers fit or acoustic-seal checks for specified models. A fit check is useful for identifying a poor seal, but it does not establish how one product’s cancellation compares with another’s.
Clean, unobstructed microphones
Microphones need an unobstructed path to capture sound. Apple warns that covered or blocked external microphones may cause squealing, chirping, feedback, or other noise-control problems. Its AirPods troubleshooting guide covers ANC issues for supported models.

Model and software support
Features and controls can depend on the headphone model and connected-device software. Check the manufacturer’s current documentation for the exact headset and device rather than assuming that similarly named modes behave alike.

- Whether you want over-ear headphones or in-ear earbuds, and whether they fit securely.
- Which ANC modes or adjustable levels are available.
- Whether transparency or ambient sound is offered and how its level is controlled.
- What “adaptive” means for that exact model: what changes automatically and whether you can adjust the behavior.
- Compatibility with your phone, computer, and required software.
- Whether the manufacturer provides a fit or seal test for the model.
