For the current M5 iPad Pro, 256GB is a reasonable starting point if you mainly use apps, documents and streaming services, with only a modest amount of content stored offline. Choose 512GB if you regularly keep more media and creative files on the iPad. Consider 1TB or 2TB when large local libraries or sustained video work make space a recurring constraint. These are workload-based recommendations, not capacity thresholds established by a storage-use study.
There is an important M5-specific wrinkle: the 1TB and 2TB models also have more unified memory and a different CPU configuration than the 256GB and 512GB models. And if you plan to record ProRes video on the iPad, the 256GB model has a lower recording limit.
Which M5 iPad Pro storage tier should you choose?
| Capacity | A good fit if you… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | Mostly use apps, documents and streaming, and keep a modest amount of content offline. | Heavy local media use can make space feel restrictive. ProRes recording is limited to 1080p at 30 fps on this model. |
| 512GB | Keep more downloaded shows, games, reference material or creative assets on-device, and want to manage storage less often. | This is a practical middle-ground recommendation, not a guarantee about how many files or apps will fit. |
| 1TB | Keep sizable creative projects or media libraries locally, or have a workflow that may benefit from the higher-memory configuration. | Comes with 16GB unified memory and a 10-core CPU, compared with 12GB and a 9-core CPU on 256GB and 512GB models. |
| 2TB | Do sustained, high-volume local work or strongly prefer keeping large projects and files available offline. | Also has 16GB unified memory and a 10-core CPU. It is not a performance requirement for ordinary tablet use. |
Apple lists all four capacities for both the 11-inch and 13-inch M5 iPad Pro. The specifications and ProRes limits are on Apple’s iPad Pro technical specifications.
Is 256GB enough for an iPad Pro?
It can be a sensible choice if most of your activity depends on streaming or cloud services and you do not keep a large amount of media or project data on the device. Think about what you want available when you are offline: downloaded video, games, reference files, photos, and creative work all compete for local space.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is no reliable universal count of photos, apps or video hours that fits in 256GB. File sizes and app needs vary, so choose based on the kinds of work and downloads you expect to keep locally rather than an assumed number of items.
Check the ProRes exception before buying
Apple lists ProRes recording up to 4K at 30 fps on the M5 iPad Pro, with one exception: the 256GB model records ProRes at 1080p at 30 fps. If recording ProRes directly on the iPad is part of your plan, account for that limit when deciding whether the entry tier suits you.

When is 512GB the better choice?
512GB is a reasonable step up when you expect to keep a broader mix of downloads and creative material on the iPad, or simply prefer not to review and remove local content as often. It can be a useful middle tier for someone who uses the iPad for more than basic apps and documents but does not have a sustained need for the largest local workspace.
That recommendation is a workflow judgment, not a measured cutoff. Apple’s published specifications establish available capacities and hardware differences, but do not say how many apps, games, photos or projects a given tier holds.

Why do the 1TB and 2TB models have different hardware?
On the M5 iPad Pro, capacity is not the only configuration change. Apple specifies 12GB of unified memory and a 9-core CPU for 256GB and 512GB models; the 1TB and 2TB versions have 16GB of unified memory and a 10-core CPU. That may matter when comparing configurations for a workflow that can use the higher-memory model.
Storage and memory are different resources: storage holds apps and files locally, while unified memory is part of the system configuration used while work is running. The fact that the larger storage tiers also have more memory does not establish that storage capacity by itself makes the same app run faster.

Can an external drive replace built-in storage?
The M5 iPad Pro’s USB-C/Thunderbolt port supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4 at up to 40Gb/s, and USB 3 at up to 10Gb/s, according to Apple’s specifications. An external drive may be worth investigating for transferring or archiving files, but those port specifications alone do not establish that a drive can replace built-in storage for every app or offline use. Check compatibility for your specific drive, app and workflow before relying on one.

A practical way to make the decision
- List what must stay on the iPad. Include offline media, active creative projects, reference materials and games—not only the apps you install.
- Decide how much storage management you accept. If you are comfortable removing downloads or moving files, a lower tier may fit better; if you want large collections available locally, consider more capacity.
- Check the recording requirement. If you intend to record ProRes on the iPad, note the 256GB model’s 1080p-at-30-fps limit.
- Separate storage needs from hardware needs. Choose 1TB or 2TB for local capacity when warranted, and consider their 16GB-memory, 10-core-CPU configuration only if it is relevant to your work.
- Compare live prices for your exact size and connectivity. The 11-inch and 13-inch models, Wi-Fi and cellular versions, and capacities do not all have the same price.
