Start with Settings > Battery to find what is using power, then address the cause: background activity, screen brightness, notifications, or a weak connection. For a quick boost, turn on Low Power Mode. If the iPad still drains unusually fast, check Battery Health where available.

Find out what is draining your iPad Pro battery

Before changing settings at random, open Settings > Battery. Compare Daily Usage for today with the seven-day view, then check App and System Activity Usage and any suggestions or Insights Apple displays. These can point to high screen brightness, background work, or a recent setup or software update. Apple’s battery-drain troubleshooting guidance notes that setup and updates can temporarily involve background activity; if the drain began immediately afterward, wait a few days and check usage again.

Investigate apps marked for Background Activity

Background Activity can be expected—for example, music playback or location tracking—but it can also account for power use while you are not actively using an app. If one app stands out, reduce its use or adjust the specific activity responsible rather than disabling unrelated features.

Consider notifications and connection quality

Notifications can wake the display. Reduce alerts from apps that do not need to wake the iPad frequently. A weak Wi-Fi or cellular signal can also use more power as the iPad searches for service. Use a stronger signal when possible; for internet access, Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than cellular. Airplane Mode can help when you will be somewhere without coverage for a while, but it disables wireless connections.

Reduce screen power use

The display can be a significant source of drain, especially if it is brighter than necessary or stays on while the iPad is idle. Lower brightness to a comfortable level. If the Battery page suggests it, enable Auto-Brightness, and set Auto-Lock to turn off the display after a reasonable idle interval. These adjustments are most relevant when Battery settings show high brightness or extended idle screen use.

Use Low Power Mode for a quick runtime boost

Turn it on at Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode, or add its control to Control Center. Low Power Mode reduces power use and may make some tasks slower. On iPad Pro models with ProMotion, it caps the display refresh rate at 60 frames per second, which may be noticeable in scrolling or animation. It switches off automatically when the iPad charges to 80 percent or higher. See Apple’s Low Power Mode guide for details.

Check battery condition if the drain continues

Battery runtime varies with workload, signal, brightness, temperature, updates, and setup, so one unusually short day does not by itself establish that the battery is failing. On supported iPad models, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If Battery Health displays “Service,” Apple advises considering battery replacement and following the onscreen instructions.

Apple says iPad batteries are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles, depending on use and charging habits. That is a design expectation, not a guarantee for an individual iPad. Apple Support also says, “For most customers, the battery in your iPad should last the whole day.” This is a general expectation, not a promise for every model, workload, or battery condition. Both statements appear in Apple’s guidance on charging and maintaining an iPad battery.

Protect battery lifespan while charging

Use the 80 percent charge limit only if it suits your routine

The 80 percent limit is available on iPad Pro (M4) and later, at Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says spending less time fully charged can reduce battery wear. With the limit enabled, charging typically stops near 80 percent and resumes at 75 percent; the iPad may occasionally charge to 100 percent to keep charge estimates accurate. Because it leaves less charge available for that day, this setting is for long-term battery health, not longer runtime from a single charge.

Apple says an iPad can be charged overnight and does not need to be fully depleted before charging. It stops charging automatically at full and resumes if the charge falls below 95 percent. Model-specific features and menu wording can vary, so check the Battery settings on your iPad.

Avoid excessive heat and cold

Apple identifies 16°C to 22°C (62°F to 72°F) as the ideal ambient range for iPad battery performance. It warns that use or charging above 35°C (95°F) may permanently reduce battery lifespan. Very cold conditions can temporarily reduce runtime or prevent charging. Keep the iPad out of direct sun and hot vehicles, and remove its case if it tends to heat up while charging. On iPadOS 18 or later, thermally limited charging can slow or pause charging when the iPad is too warm or cold, then resume automatically when its temperature returns to a safe range. See Apple’s guide to thermally limited charging.

Which battery fix should you try?

Goal Start with
Get more time from the current charge Turn on Low Power Mode, lower brightness, reduce unnecessary app activity, or use Wi-Fi instead of cellular when practical.
Identify the cause of drain Review Daily Usage, the seven-day comparison, App and System Activity Usage, and Battery suggestions or Insights.
Reduce long-term battery wear Avoid excessive heat; on eligible iPad Pro (M4) and later models, consider the 80 percent charge limit if a smaller daily charge is acceptable.
Recharge away from an outlet A compatible USB-C power bank can provide a recharge on the go, but it does not improve runtime per charge. Check compatibility and accessory output for your exact model; Apple documents USB-C charging for current USB-C iPad Pro models in its USB-C charging guidance.

Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on if you use them. Apple says they draw minimal power when not connected to a network or accessory, and switching them off can disable features; routinely turning them off is not a universal battery fix.
