Use Canva for a Venn-specific whiteboard and templates, PowerPoint for editable SmartArt layouts, or Google Slides to build the diagram from shapes and text boxes. In every tool, put shared attributes in the overlapping areas and differences in the parts of each circle that do not overlap.
Plan the Venn diagram before you build it
A Venn diagram uses overlapping circles to show relationships between concepts, categories, or groups. Each circle represents one set: place attributes shared by sets in their intersection, and attributes unique to a set in its non-overlapping area. Canva and Microsoft describe the format as a way to show similarities and differences between concepts (Canva’s Venn diagram maker; Microsoft Support’s Venn diagram instructions).
Before opening a tool, name each set and sort your points into three groups: unique to the first set, shared, and unique to the second set. For diagrams with more than two sets, decide which overlaps matter and keep labels short enough to read in the intersections.
How to make a Venn diagram in Canva
- Open Canva on desktop or mobile and search for Venn Diagram.
- Choose a Venn diagram template, or start with a blank whiteboard.
- Add the set names and place each attribute in the appropriate circle or intersection.
- Customize the text, colors, and shapes. Adjust the design so the labels remain easy to distinguish where the circles overlap.
- Share the whiteboard with collaborators or present it. Canva also describes embedding diagrams in Docs, presentations, and other contexts.
Canva’s dedicated Venn entry point and whiteboard workflow make it a direct option when you want a template or collaborative canvas. The available templates and interface may change; Canva’s template-quantity wording should not be treated as a fixed count (Canva Venn diagram maker).

How to make a Venn diagram in PowerPoint
- Go to Insert > SmartArt.
- In the SmartArt gallery, choose Relationship, select a Venn layout such as Basic Venn, and confirm.
- Enter text in each circle directly or use the SmartArt Text pane.
- To label an intersection, insert a separate text box and position it over the overlap. Microsoft says overlap text cannot be entered through the SmartArt Text pane.
- To add or remove circles, use SmartArt Tools > Design > Add Shape. Use Format Shape to change fill and transparency.
Microsoft lists several Venn variants, including Linear, Stacked, and Radial. Choose one based on the relationship you need to communicate; the arrangement can emphasize sequence, gradation, or a central idea (Microsoft Support: Create a Venn diagram). The precise ribbon labels can vary by PowerPoint edition.
How to make a Venn diagram in Google Slides
- Insert circle shapes for the sets and position them so the relevant areas overlap.
- Add text boxes for the set names, distinct attributes, and shared attributes. Place intersection labels over the corresponding overlaps.
- Use Arrange to order, align, distribute, or center the shapes and text boxes.
- Review the diagram in presentation view and adjust label placement or contrast if anything is difficult to read.
Google’s cited Slides help documents general shape, text, and object-arrangement features rather than a dedicated Venn command. This method builds the diagram manually from those tools (Google Slides: Insert and arrange text, shapes, diagrams, and lines). Templates and theme or layout customization are optional; availability of templates can depend on locale or account context (Google Slides: Use a template or change the theme, background, or layout).

Which tool should you use?
| Tool | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Canva | A Venn-focused start with a whiteboard or template | Search for “Venn Diagram”; customize the design and collaborate on the whiteboard. |
| PowerPoint | Structured editing with built-in Venn SmartArt layouts | Use Insert > SmartArt > Relationship. Intersection labels need separate text boxes. |
| Google Slides | A diagram made directly in an existing Google presentation | Build with circles, text boxes, and Arrange controls; the cited help does not describe a dedicated Venn layout. |
This comparison reflects the official feature documentation, not hands-on testing or an independent usability test. Interface wording and availability may vary by edition, platform, locale, or later product updates.
