Using a tool is not the same as trusting every output—or being comfortable with every way AI might be used.
Use and trust measure different things
Someone may use a chatbot to draft an email, then check its claims before acting on them. That is use without blanket reliance. Trust can mean confidence that an answer is correct, that a system is safe, or that it is acceptable to share information with it; surveys do not always measure the same dimension.
The University of Melbourne and KPMG’s 2025 global study found that 66% of respondents reported intentional regular AI use for personal, work or study purposes, while 46% were willing to trust AI systems. In that study, trust included willingness to rely on outputs or share information to enable a system to work. The results show that reported use and willingness to trust can coexist at different levels; they do not establish that distrust causes people to adopt AI. University of Melbourne and KPMG, 2025 global study.
Practical benefits can be worth limited reliance
People do not need to regard AI as consistently reliable to find it useful for a bounded task. A draft can be edited, an idea can be rejected, and a summary can be checked against the original. In these situations, the user may treat AI as an assistant rather than an authority. That is a reasonable interpretation of the coexistence of reported benefits and reservations, not a causal conclusion established by the surveys.

Common reasons people report using generative AI
In the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 2025/2026 survey, 65% of UK generative AI users said they used it to save time, 55% for ideas or inspiration, and 48% to summarise or explain something. These motivation questions were asked only in the online questionnaire, so the percentages describe identified users in that online sample, not the full paper-and-online sample. UK DSIT Public Engagement Survey 2025/2026.
Perceived benefits do not erase perceived risks
The University of Melbourne and KPMG’s 2025 global study found that 73% of respondents perceived some benefits from AI use in society, while 79% were concerned about negative outcomes. Those answers can both be true: a person may value help with routine work and remain uneasy about wider consequences. University of Melbourne and KPMG, 2025 global study.

People can accept assistance without welcoming AI everywhere
Willingness to let AI help with everyday tasks is not a vote of confidence in all uses of the technology. In a survey of 5,023 U.S. adults conducted June 9–15, 2025, Pew Research Center found nearly three-quarters would be willing to let AI assist at least a little with day-to-day tasks. At the same time, 50% said they were more concerned than excited about increased AI use in daily life, and about six in ten wanted more control over how AI is used in their own lives. Pew Research Center, 2025.
Trust changes with the stakes and the task
People may tolerate uncertainty in a low-stakes task but be more cautious when a mistake could affect their health or finances. A Bank for International Settlements bulletin based on a representative U.S. household survey reported: “Nonetheless, all groups trust gen AI less than humans, especially in the provision of financial and medical services.” This finding supports a distinction between routine assistance and consequential decisions; it does not mean every person makes the same choice in every situation. Bank for International Settlements, 23 April 2024.

Concern about accuracy and privacy can coexist with use
UK adults surveyed by DSIT in 2025/2026 identified inaccurate information as a risk of AI use (74%) and privacy or security as a risk (69%). Yet 59% of UK adults reported using generative AI in the previous three months. These figures describe different responses, not a contradiction: a person can use a tool and still worry about what it gets wrong or what happens to shared information. UK DSIT Public Engagement Survey 2025/2026.

The numbers above come from different countries, field dates, samples and question wording. “Regular use,” use in the past three months, willingness to accept assistance and willingness to trust a system are not interchangeable measures, so the percentages should not be read as a single adoption-versus-trust score.

The University of Melbourne and KPMG’s 2025 global study reported higher regular use and trust in its emerging-economy group than in advanced economies. That is a finding within that study, not a universal rule or proof of why the groups differed. University of Melbourne and KPMG, 2025 global study.
The clearest explanation is therefore practical and qualified: people may use AI where it offers a worthwhile convenience, limit how much they rely on it, and remain wary about accuracy, privacy or higher-stakes applications. The survey evidence documents these attitudes and behaviors; it does not identify a single cause that explains every user.
