You can spend less on a gaming PC setup without sacrificing the performance you care about by choosing games and frame-rate goals first, then paying for the components and peripherals that serve them. Set a total budget, check game requirements, prioritize the CPU and GPU for your target experience, and reuse compatible equipment before replacing it. This guidance focuses on PC gaming; console setups have different upgrade and spending choices.
How to make your gaming setup more affordable without giving up performance
Start with the experience you want, not a generic “gaming PC” label. The same budget can lead to different choices depending on your games, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate goal, portability needs, and whether you also create content or stream.
- Set a maximum for the complete setup. Include the PC, display, and any mouse, keyboard, headset, or speakers you actually need. Intel’s budget buying guide advises accounting for those costs rather than spending the whole budget on the tower.
- Name your games and target experience. Decide which titles matter, what resolution you want, and whether smooth competitive play, visual detail, portability, or a quiet workspace matters most.
- Check each game’s recommended requirements. Intel’s build guide recommends reviewing game requirements and checking that planned components work together.
- Compare systems for those games. Use relevant game benchmarks when available, and check the test’s resolution, settings, and hardware configuration. A broad “gaming” designation does not establish how a particular game will run.
HP’s 2026 buying guide offers illustrative targets: entry-tier systems for casual, indie, and older AAA games at 1080p/60 FPS; mid-tier for mainstream AAA and everyday play at 1080p/60–144 FPS; high-tier at 1080p/144+ FPS or 1440p/60 FPS; and enthusiast-tier at 1440p/144 FPS or 4K/60+ FPS. These are HP’s buying categories, not independently tested guarantees for any specific game or PC. Treat them as prompts for defining your goal, then verify the exact configuration against the titles you play.
Which parts deserve the budget?
The CPU and GPU both influence in-game performance, but neither is universally the bottleneck. The game, resolution, settings, and target frame rate affect which component matters most in a particular setup. Intel identifies CPU and GPU as important to gaming performance; HP’s buying guide treats GPU choice as a key driver of frame rate and visual quality. Both sources sell hardware, so use their advice as a starting framework rather than a neutral benchmark comparison.

Prioritize the performance you will notice
Compare exact CPU and GPU models and the performance evidence for your games. Match the rest of the configuration to that target, checking memory, storage, cooling, and power provisions rather than assuming that a GPU tier alone determines the outcome.
Trim decoration before capability
RGB lighting, case styling, and cosmetic extras may be worth paying for if you value them, but they do not improve the performance of the hardware inside. Intel explicitly cautions that lighting and flair can add cost without changing internal hardware performance. If frame rate is the priority, compare a plain configuration with a similarly equipped decorated one before paying the aesthetic premium.

What can you reuse instead of buying?
A working monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, or speakers can keep the initial bill down. Intel notes that older displays can work when their connections are suitable, and compatible keyboard and mouse devices can be upgraded later. Reuse is sensible only if the equipment supports your actual needs—for example, a display’s resolution and refresh rate should suit your target.
- Check that the display has a compatible connection and supports the resolution and refresh rate you want.
- Keep a keyboard or mouse that works reliably; replace it only if it is unsuitable for your games or fails.
- Use existing audio gear if it meets your needs. Intel notes that audio options span a wide range of prices.
For storage, first consider your game library. Removing games you are not playing can help manage limited capacity; compatible additional or external storage may also be an option. Intel’s guide calls 500 GB or more ideal, but that is its general recommendation, not a requirement for every player. The capacity you need depends on how many games you keep installed and the exact system’s expansion options.

When is an upgrade better than replacing the PC?
For an existing desktop, identify what is limiting the experience before buying anything. RAM, storage, and sometimes the graphics card can be upgraded, but the possible upgrade and its value depend on the exact configuration. Do not assume that adding RAM or an SSD will increase frame rates: an upgrade helps only when it addresses a real constraint in that system and workload.
Laptop upgrades are more limited and model-specific. Verify the exact model and configuration before planning a memory or storage change; do not assume a laptop graphics card can be replaced. HP’s guide frames desktop-versus-laptop choice around lifestyle and upgrade needs, but that is vendor guidance—not a universal price-per-frame comparison.

How should you compare a prebuilt with a custom PC?
Compare the complete system, not just the headline CPU and GPU. For either route, account for required peripherals and check the exact parts, upgrade limits, and support terms.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact CPU and GPU | Marketing family names or broad tiers do not establish performance for your games. Check model-level comparisons and relevant test conditions. |
| Memory and storage | Check capacity, configuration, and whether the exact system allows later upgrades; neither is a guaranteed frame-rate fix. |
| Power and cooling | Confirm that the configuration supports its components and that the case or system design leaves a practical upgrade path. |
| Compatibility | For a custom build, Intel advises making a parts list before buying because all components need to be compatible. For a prebuilt, verify its specific upgrade constraints and any proprietary parts. |
| Warranty and support | HP argues that a prebuilt can offer a single support contact and take compatibility work off the buyer; weigh that convenience against the DIY system’s parts, cost, and your comfort assembling it. |
| Complete cost | Add a display and essential input or audio devices if you do not already own them. Compare equivalent setups, not a tower-only price against a complete bundle. |
A prebuilt may be useful if you want a supported complete system and less assembly work. A custom PC may suit you if you are comfortable verifying compatibility and selecting parts. Neither route is automatically cheaper: compare current, region-specific prices and the precise configurations you can actually buy.

How to avoid misleading price and performance examples
Prices and example builds age quickly. TechSpot’s value gaming rig guide is an early-2025 snapshot: it listed a Radeon RX 7600 XT at $350 and used 32 GB (2 × 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 memory. Those are historical examples from that build, not current price quotes or a recommendation to buy those parts now.
HP’s guide, accessed in 2026, gives an example total of about $950–980 for a Victus gaming laptop with selected peripherals. That is HP’s illustrative bundle total, not a live quote or an independently validated price for every region. Likewise, HP’s FPS targets are vendor-published projections, not independent test results.
When comparing any advertised figure, check the source’s date, region, exact system configuration, game, resolution, settings, and test method. A historical parts list or untethered FPS claim cannot tell you which system is best value today.
When should you wait rather than compromise?
If no available option fits both your budget and the performance you need, waiting is a reasonable choice. Intel’s budget guide says, “If you’ve done the research, and still can’t match your budget to the performance you’re looking for, there’s nothing wrong with waiting to make your purchase.” That can be better than buying a system that misses your target or paying for upgrades you do not need.
