For smoother Steam Frame VR streaming, connect the gaming PC to your router with Ethernet, then use Steam’s performance overlay to find out whether the remaining problem is wireless network variation or PC rendering and encoding. Steam Frame’s included 6 GHz streaming adapter is a separate headset link; wiring the PC does not mean the headset needs Ethernet.
How Steam Frame’s streaming network is connected
There are two links to keep in mind: the gaming PC connects to the router, and the headset receives the stream wirelessly. Valve recommends wiring the host PC to the router for the best Remote Play result. This avoids making the stream travel wirelessly from the PC to the router before it is sent wirelessly to the headset. Steam Frame includes a plug-and-play 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E adapter for streaming; the headset also has Wi-Fi 7 with dual radios for concurrent 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 6 GHz VR streaming. Valve describes multi-link streaming as combining the headset’s available connections with real-time redundancy. A wired PC connection is a recommended first step, not a requirement to replace your router or proof that Wi-Fi cannot work. Keep the headset and adapter in good range of the router, and diagnose the stream before changing several settings at once.
Start with the performance overlay
Enable Steam Remote Play’s performance overlay and observe it during a repeatable scene. Valve identifies large spikes in the cyan network-time line as a sign of highly variable network time; those spikes commonly coincide with stutter or freezing. If network time is stable while the picture or frame delivery struggles, investigate game rendering and host encoding rather than assuming the Wi-Fi is at fault. If network time is unstable, adjust the wireless conditions
- Reduce competing traffic. Pause other high-traffic wireless activity while testing. Valve lists other applications using the wireless network as a possible cause of interference.
- Improve placement. Reduce distance and obstacles between the router and headset or adapter. Walls, floors, metal, and nearby electronics can weaken or interfere with the signal.
- Test bands and channels. Valve’s Frame-specific troubleshooting recommends trying another available 6 GHz, 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz connection and a less congested router channel. No band is best in every home: range, interference, router capabilities, and local conditions matter. The recommendation is in Steam Frame network troubleshooting.
- Treat channel width as an experiment. Valve’s general Steam Link advice prefers 5 GHz over congested 2.4 GHz for that setup and suggests starting at 40 MHz, then trying 80 MHz on an 802.11ac-capable router if stable. Wider channels can offer more speed but are more sensitive to distance and radio-frequency noise. This is general Steam Link guidance, not a mandatory Steam Frame setting; compare overlay results rather than assuming 80 MHz is better.
- Update router firmware if instability persists. Valve notes that some router bugs can affect Remote Play UDP traffic. For applicable Remote Play networks, its guidance also describes network prioritization in Steam settings and router QoS or device priority; menu wording may change.
If the network is stable, test PC and game settings
Valve’s general Remote Play guidance recommends a minimum quad-core CPU for the host computer, and advises lowering game resolution and turning off vertical sync to improve streaming. Its low-framerate troubleshooting guidance also recommends adjusting streaming or game resolution and experimenting with hardware-encoding options for the installed GPU. Encoding results vary by graphics card, so toggle the option and compare rather than assuming one vendor-specific setting is right. Change one setting at a time where possible. Lower resolution may trade image detail for smoother delivery; compare both the overlay and the image in the same scene. Valve’s general Remote Play material does not establish a Steam Frame-specific minimum PC specification for best streaming or a universal set of game settings. Its discussion of a GPU that supports hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding concerns client requirements, not a Steam Frame host-GPU minimum.

Check software notes for Error 17
Valve’s SteamOS 0.4.3 beta announcement, dated October 1, 2026, reports VR streaming reliability improvements and fixes for Error 17. At that release, Valve advised PC users to use SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce those connection issues. These are beta and version-sensitive notes, not a timeless setting: check the current SteamOS release notes and SteamVR notes for your installed versions before applying the workaround.

There is no universally superior router configuration established for every Steam Frame setup. Judge each adjustment against what you can observe:

- Network time: did the cyan line’s variability or spikes improve?
- Wireless conditions: did a different band or channel, reduced interference, or better placement help?
- Host performance: with a stable network, did resolution or hardware-encoding changes improve delivery?
- Image quality: did the stream become smoother at an acceptable level of detail?
Valve says Steam Frame’s foveated streaming can deliver over 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth by concentrating detail where the eyes are looking. That is a Valve product-page claim, not an independent benchmark or a guaranteed result for an individual home. The official materials cited here establish no universal numeric Wi-Fi throughput target for Steam Frame.
