Before buying a refurbished or open-box Apple device, confirm that you can return it, that setup is not blocked by a previous owner or organization, and that its condition, repair history, battery, and remaining coverage justify the price. “Refurbished” and “open-box” are seller labels, not a universal guarantee of what was inspected or repaired; check what the seller’s grade and certification mean for that specific listing.
Start with the seller, return terms, and exact device
Buy from a seller you can contact if the device is misdescribed or develops a problem after setup. Apple’s pre-owned buying guide is specifically for iPhone; for iPad and MacBook, these seller checks are prudent buyer practice, not an Apple-published checklist.

- Read the return window, the reasons accepted for a return, and the steps and cost involved in sending the device back.
- Ask what the seller’s inspection or certification covers, who performed it, and what the grade means for scratches, battery condition, repairs, and included accessories.
- Save the listing, condition description, serial number, and seller communications in case you need to show what was promised.
- Confirm the exact model, configuration, storage, and included items. A label such as “open-box” alone does not establish that the device is unused, complete, or covered by a particular warranty.
Apple’s pre-owned iPhone buying guide also advises checking the seller’s return policy, certification process, and known physical damage before buying online.
Make sure the device is not locked to someone else
For an iPhone, do not buy while Activation Lock is enabled. Apple Support’s instruction is: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Ask the seller to remove the lock in person and let you proceed through setup. If an online delivery displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” return it rather than relying on a promise that the previous owner will fix it later. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance for pre-owned iPhones.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
For iPad and MacBook, make sure you can complete setup and use the device without a prior owner’s account blocking access. On a MacBook, also check that setup is not blocked by an organization’s management controls. If the seller cannot demonstrate that you will be able to activate and use the device, treat that as a reason not to proceed.
Inspect the device and test the functions you will rely on
iPhone and iPad
Remove the case and inspect the screen, edges, back, and charging connector for damage. Power the device on; if it will not turn on, try charging it. Apple says not to buy a pre-owned iPhone that will not charge. Once it is running and you can access the interface, test the buttons, cameras, speakers, microphone, Wi-Fi, charging, and any connectivity you need. Apple’s steps and menu labels can vary by model and software version; its iPhone inspection guidance covers the iPhone checks.
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
MacBook
As a practical inspection—not a test list Apple publishes for open-box MacBooks—check the display and case, then try the keyboard, trackpad, ports, camera, speakers, wireless connections, charging, and battery. Confirm that the machine can complete setup and is not tied to someone else’s account or an organization’s management controls.
Check carrier restrictions on iPhone if you need an unlocked phone
On iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for the carrier-lock field. “No SIM restrictions” indicates an unlocked device. Check this before purchase if you need to use a particular carrier; menu wording may vary with the iPhone model and iOS version.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Check battery condition and repair history
iPhone battery and parts
On supported iPhones, review battery health and any battery-related messages, then open Settings > General > About and check Parts and Service History. Apple says iOS 15.2 or later may show this history, depending on the model and replaced part. The iPhone Parts and Service History guide says the listed parts vary: iPhone 12 models and later can show battery, display, logic board, front camera, and rear cameras; iPhone 11 models can show battery, display, and camera; iPhone XR, XS-family, and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) can show battery. Only the most recent service to a part appears.
Interpret the labels as prompts for questions and tests, not as automatic proof that a device is unusable:
Rank #4
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
- Genuine: the part is identified as a genuine Apple part and the service information is available.
- Unknown: the part may be non-genuine, may not be functioning as expected, may not have been fully verified or linked, or may have been modified so it cannot be verified.
- Unverified: this can apply to a logic board; Apple notes that an unverified logic board may affect features such as Apple Pay.
- Used: the part was previously installed in another iPhone.
A missing Parts and Service History screen does not prove that no repair took place. Apple says coverage depends on model and software, and the screen shows only the most recent service for a part. Battery-health information may also be unavailable for an unknown or non-genuine battery, so a displayed percentage is not conclusive when the battery cannot be verified.
iPad parts history
For supported iPads, check Settings > General > About. Apple’s iPad parts and service history guide, published June 11, 2026, lists selected components for iPad Pro M4 and M5, iPad Air M2, M3, and M4, iPad mini A17 Pro, and iPad A16. The history appears only if a part was replaced or is not functioning as expected, and it shows only the most recent service. Do not treat the absence of a history panel on another model as evidence that it was never repaired.

MacBook parts history
Apple’s Mac parts and service history guide, published May 29, 2026, says Parts & Service appears on Apple-silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later when the Mac detects a repair. It describes Genuine, Unknown, Unverified, and Used labels; Apple notes that an unverified logic board may affect features such as Apple Pay. Older Macs and unsupported configurations may not show this screen, so inspect the exact model and test its hardware directly.

Check the device’s Apple coverage status and ask for proof of purchase if the displayed purchase date looks wrong. Apple says its coverage system uses purchase-date information available to Apple, so its estimated date can be incorrect. Its coverage display also may not show every consumer-law remedy available where you live; coverage and statutory rights depend on jurisdiction.
AppleCare eligibility is not automatic for a used device. Apple says checking eligibility can require a remote check, photos, or an Apple Store inspection, and availability varies by region and device. Use Apple’s AppleCare eligibility guidance for the applicable device and region rather than assuming a resale purchase qualifies.

A severe ownership lock or no credible remedy if the item differs from its description is a stop sign. For Apple Certified Refurbished products, consult Apple’s Apple Certified Refurbished page and the terms for your region; do not assume a third-party listing uses Apple’s program or its conditions.
