To compare flashlights fairly, compare the same operating modes and read lumens, candela, beam distance, and runtime together. Lumens measure total light output; candela measures the beam’s peak intensity; beam distance is measured to a defined low-light threshold; and runtime ends when output falls to a specified fraction of its starting level. None of those figures alone tells you whether a beam suits your task.
What do flashlight lumens and candela tell you?
Lumens describe total light output: the total luminous flux emitted by the flashlight. Candela describes peak beam intensity, usually the brightest part along the beam’s central axis. These measure different properties. A flashlight with more lumens emits more total light, but that number alone does not tell you how tightly the light is focused or how intense its central beam is.
For a useful comparison, check both figures for the same mode. A broad flood beam and a concentrated spot beam can distribute their light differently, even when their lumen figures are similar.
What does flashlight beam distance mean?
Under the ANSI/PLATO FL1 definition, beam distance is the distance at which the beam reaches 0.25 lux. The 2018 standard, hosted by Streamlight, defines it as: “The distance from the device at which the light beam is 0.25 lux.” Read the ANSI/PLATO FL1 Standard (2018).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This threshold gives manufacturers a standardized reach measure, not a promise that you will clearly identify a person, trail obstacle, or other target at that distance. It also does not describe how wide the beam is or how much useful light reaches the surrounding area. Peli’s explanation of flashlight standards covers the same FL1 threshold.
How is flashlight runtime measured?
In the 2018 ANSI/PLATO FL1 definition, runtime starts with the light-output reading taken 30 seconds after turn-on with fresh batteries. It ends when output falls to 10% of that reference reading. In other words, a quoted runtime does not mean the flashlight maintains its initial brightness for that entire period. The standard gives a common endpoint for comparison; it does not describe every change in brightness along the way.

When comparing runtime claims, match the operating mode and check the manufacturer’s stated battery conditions. A runtime figure for a low mode is not comparable to one for a high mode.
How to compare flashlight specifications fairly
- Identify the task and likely distance. Decide whether you need broad nearby illumination, a concentrated beam for looking farther ahead, or a balance of both.
- Compare the same type of mode. Use the manufacturers’ mode names and descriptions to match spot with spot, flood with flood, or a combined mode with a comparable combined mode. Do not treat a model’s brightest or longest-reaching mode as representative of all its modes.
- Read the figures together. Compare lumens for total output, candela for peak intensity, beam distance for the standardized threshold, and runtime for the mode you would actually use.
- Check what the specifications establish. Note the battery type or capacity and beam description when provided. If a figure is missing, or a listing does not identify a value as FL1-tested, do not assume it is directly comparable to a confirmed FL1 figure.
- Consider the beam pattern, not just the reach number. Petzl’s technical guidance on lighting distance explains that distance depends on brightness but mainly on beam shape. A broad beam may better illuminate a nearby work area, while a concentrated beam may put more light toward a distant point.
Example: compare modes, not just flashlight models
Pelican’s official 9050 specifications show why a model name alone is insufficient: the page lists distinct values for three modes. The figures below are the manufacturer’s published values; the page does not state a publication date.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which flashlight specification matters most?
It depends on the task. For a nearby area, beam width and useful surrounding illumination may matter more than maximum distance. For seeing farther ahead, candela and beam distance help describe a concentrated beam’s reach. Runtime matters in the mode you expect to use, and its FL1 value should be understood as time until output drops to 10% of the reference reading—not time at unchanged brightness.

Use the figures as a set: first match modes, then compare output, intensity, distance, and runtime, and finally judge whether the beam shape fits the job. Do not rank lights by lumens alone or treat the beam-distance endpoint as a guarantee of practical visibility at that range.
