To make AI-generated video shots look like they belong together, use a stable visual reference where the model supports one, keep a reusable description of the character and scene, and give each shot a clear, limited action. For image-to-video, let the reference establish appearance and composition; use the prompt mainly to describe motion and camera behavior. These methods guide continuity, but they cannot guarantee identical results across poses, complex motion, or separate generations.
Consistency can mean keeping a subject stable within one clip, matching several separately generated clips, or carrying a character through changing scenes. The workflow is similar, but multiple clips and scene changes usually need stronger references and more deliberate editing.
Build a prompt around one shot
Describe what the viewer should see happen in a single shot. Start with the subject and one visible action, then add only the setting, camera movement, and style details that matter. A compact text-to-video template is:
Medium shot of [same character description] [one clear action] in [stable environment]. [Camera movement]. [Lighting or style detail].

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example: “Medium shot of a short-haired woman in a mustard raincoat opening a red umbrella on a quiet city sidewalk. The camera slowly tracks toward her. Soft overcast light, natural colors.” Reuse the same canonical appearance description for that character in later shots. Avoid changing details such as age, wardrobe, hair color, or visual style unless the story calls for a visible change.
Keep the prompt internally consistent. A direction to hold a static wide shot conflicts with a fast handheld close-up; a character cannot both remain still and run across the frame. Complex sequences with several actions, camera moves, and scene changes give the model more opportunities to interpret instructions differently. Begin with the key action, then add details gradually. Runway’s official Gen-4 guide puts the principle plainly: “The Gen-4 model thrives on prompt simplicity.” Runway Gen-4 Video Prompting Guide
Use a reference image for image-to-video
When a model accepts an image input, choose a clean frame that already shows the subject and the visual treatment you want. The image can anchor appearance, composition, colors, lighting, and style, leaving the text prompt to explain what changes over time. Runway’s image-to-video guidance specifically recommends focusing text on motion rather than restating details already visible in the image.

For example: “The subject turns slowly toward the window as the camera makes a gentle push-in; curtains move lightly in the breeze.” Add appearance details only when introducing something the image does not show, specifying a transformation, or clarifying an interaction.
Repeating every visible feature in a long prompt may distract from the intended motion or create unexpected results. A reference image reduces ambiguity, but it is guidance rather than a guarantee: identity can still drift, particularly with unusual poses or complex movement. See Runway’s Gen-4 image-to-video guide and its Gen-4.5 image-to-video guide.
Keep the character consistent across separate clips
How are you keeping AI characters consistent across multiple scenes? Start by reusing the same approved visual anchor—such as a reference image or reusable character asset—where the platform supports it. Pair it with the same concise appearance description and avoid prompt details that contradict the reference. A prompt that merely says “same character as before” should not be treated as a persistent identity control across separate generations.

For multiple shots, continuity also depends on what happens at the cut. Plan the end of one shot and the start of the next so the character’s action can plausibly continue. When reviewing the join, check:
- Face, hair, age presentation, and wardrobe
- Location, lighting, and light direction
- Screen direction and camera position
- The character’s action or pose at the cut
If the next scene changes setting or camera angle, keep the identity reference and core character description stable while changing only the details that should change in the story. If supported, use a previous clip or its final frame as the next shot’s starting reference. Some platforms also offer explicit video extension or first/last-frame controls; those are model-specific features, not universal prompt techniques.

Keep a stable base prompt and change one variable per attempt. First settle the action, then adjust camera movement, environmental motion, and style. Save prompt versions and the reference assets alongside their generated clips so you can identify which change helped or caused drift.

- Generate a simple baseline. Use one clear action and the strongest available reference.
- Inspect the result. Check identity, motion, framing, and any unwanted changes in wardrobe or setting.
- Change one instruction. If the action works but the camera does not, change the camera direction only.
- Reuse the best result. Keep the successful prompt and reference, then build the next shot from them where the tool permits.
- Join and review clips in an editor. Inspect the cut for continuity rather than assuming separate generations will match automatically.
If identity drifts, check the reference quality, conflicting prompt details, scene complexity, motion complexity, and camera angle before adding more descriptive text. More words do not necessarily mean more control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know which controls your video model supports
Prompt advice and continuity controls vary by model and version. For example, Runway’s Gen-4 guide describes generating 5- or 10-second videos from an input image and text, recommends simple prompts and positive descriptions of desired action, and warns that negative phrasing is unsupported and may produce unpredictable or opposite results. Do not assume those particular instructions apply to every Runway model.
Runway’s Gen-4.5 text-to-video recommendations are optimized for Gen-4.5; that guide notes text-to-video can be useful when exact character or scene consistency is not the priority. Its Gen-4.5 image-to-video guidance instead treats the input image as the anchor for appearance and composition, with text focused on motion, camera work, and temporal progression. See the Gen-4.5 text-to-video guide.

Other platforms document different controls. Google’s Gemini API documentation for Veo 3.1 describes up to three reference images for a single person, character, or product, as well as first/last-frame control and video extension. These are Veo 3.1 API capabilities; they should not be assumed to exist in every Google video interface. OpenAI’s Sora 2 guide describes image input as a reference for composition and style, a Characters API that uses a short reference video to create reusable characters, and video extension. Access and version availability can change, so check the current platform documentation before relying on a feature.
When comparing tools for a continuity-heavy project, check which reference inputs they accept, whether reusable characters or frame controls are available, how clips can be extended, and whether you are using text-to-video or image-to-video. These controls can make a workflow more repeatable, but no prompt phrase or reference method guarantees perfect identity across every shot.
