To improve continuity, define the subject and style before generating, reuse supported references, keep each shot focused, and handle longer dialogue and pacing in the edit. These steps reduce avoidable variation, but they cannot guarantee identical results.
Why AI-generated video continuity breaks
Video models accept different combinations of text, images, audio, and video, and their continuity controls vary. If a later shot is generated without the same reference context or clear direction, it may not retain details from an earlier one. That is a practical workflow explanation, not a claim about every model’s internal operation.
Voice and timing can also suffer when a clip is asked to carry too much dialogue or too many beats. OpenAI’s Sora 2 prompting guide cautions that long, complex speeches are unlikely to sync well and can disrupt pacing.
Build continuity into the generation workflow
1. Define the details that must stay fixed
Before generating, write a compact continuity sheet covering the subject’s appearance, clothing, voice description, setting, and visual style. Repeat the same key descriptions from shot to shot. Where the model supports it, reuse a character asset or image reference instead of relying only on a phrase such as “same character.” OpenAI documents reusable character references in its Sora 2 prompting guide.

Google’s Veo API documentation says reference images can guide content and help preserve a person’s, character’s, or product’s appearance; it documents up to three reference images. The same documentation describes a seed parameter for Veo 3 models. Treat a seed as a repeatability control to test within that model, not as a guarantee of identical shots or cross-model consistency.
2. Keep subject identity separate from visual style
If a model offers distinct reference roles, specify which input defines the subject and which defines the look. ElevenLabs’ reference guide describes this distinction for Veo: a subject reference guides the subject or scene elements, while a style reference transfers visual style. Supported fields and combinations depend on the model, so check the guide for the model you are using.

3. Give each shot one clear job
Describe one principal action per shot, along with a clear camera instruction and a defined start or end state. Avoid changing the subject’s appearance, location, style, and camera movement all at once unless that change is intentional. This makes it easier to identify what needs adjusting when a result drifts; it does not guarantee continuity.
Where available, use frame controls to direct transitions. Google’s Veo API documentation describes start- and end-frame controls for directing a video’s beginning and ending.

- Enhanced Screen Recording - Capture screen & webcam together, export as separate clips, and adjust placement in your final project.
- Color Adjustment Controls - Automatically improve image color, contrast, and quality of your videos.
- Frame Interpolation - Transform grainy footage into smoother, more detailed scenes by seamlessly adding AI-generated frames. (feature available on Intel AI PCs only)
- AI Object Mask - Auto-detect & mask any object, even in complex scenes, to highlight elements and add stunning effects.
- Brand Kits - Manage assets, colors, and designs to keep your video content consistent and memorable.
4. Keep dialogue manageable and voice control explicit
Keep spoken lines short enough to fit the shot’s intended duration. For longer narration, consider generating one continuous voice track separately and cutting the visuals to its timing. Alternatively, use audio reference inputs when the model supports them; ElevenLabs’ reference documentation describes audio references for supported models.
5. Generate clips you can shape in an editor
Make manageable shots, choose the best takes, then assemble and trim them in a video editor. OpenAI’s Sora 2 prompting guide gives a project-dependent example in which stitching two four-second clips in editing may work better than generating one eight-second clip. That is an example, not a universal maximum shot length.

Diagnose the problem by layer
| What changed | What to check or adjust |
|---|---|
| Face, clothing, or product appearance | Check that the same identity description and supported subject or character reference are supplied for each shot. Google’s Veo API documentation describes reference images for guiding and preserving appearance. |
| Color palette or rendering style | Check the style reference, if available, and repeat the intended style instruction. ElevenLabs’ reference guide distinguishes style references from subject references for Veo. |
| Voice changes between clips | Check whether the model supports voice or audio references and whether you supplied them consistently. If practical, use a separately controlled voice track. |
| Speech sounds rushed or falls out of sync | Shorten the spoken line or split it across shots; OpenAI warns that long, complex speeches may sync poorly and disrupt pacing in its Sora 2 prompting guide. |
| The sequence feels uneven overall | Review clip selection, cut points, and shot duration in the editor rather than trying to solve every pacing issue in a single generation. |
Check controls for the exact model and version
Do not assume that a feature available in one product, model, or interface also exists in another. For example, Google’s Veo 3.1 API documentation describes eight-second videos with native audio, supported resolutions, up to three reference images, a seed parameter available for Veo 3 models, and start/end-frame direction. Capabilities, access, and availability can change; verify the current documentation for the exact model, API, and region before planning a workflow.
ElevenLabs notes that reference fields and constraints vary by model, and its model coverage can change. OpenAI’s Sora product page describes starting from a prompt or image and editing characters or scenes; product features and availability may change as well.

When choosing a workflow, compare the specific controls documented for the version you can use: reusable subject or character references, style references, voice or audio references, first- and last-frame controls, clip extension, practical shot duration, and editor control over cuts and audio. A product name alone does not establish which of these controls are available.
