Choose cloud file storage when applications need shared folders, file paths, or SMB/NFS access. Choose object storage when applications can use an object API and the data is unstructured, distributed, or intended for delivery, analytics, backup, or archive. The workload’s interface and access pattern matter more than the storage label alone.
What is the difference between file and object storage?
Cloud file storage presents a shared file system. Applications work with files and directories, commonly over SMB or NFS. That makes it a natural fit for software that expects mounted shared folders or familiar file operations. AWS describes shared file systems as useful for workloads that rely on them and for integrating storage without code changes: AWS storage services overview.
Object storage stores data as objects and exposes it through service APIs rather than a conventional shared directory tree. Azure Blob Storage is designed for large amounts of unstructured data, with access through HTTP(S), REST, command-line tools, and client libraries: Azure Blob Storage overview.
When should you use object storage?
Object storage is a strong starting point when an application can use the service API and data is read or delivered as objects rather than manipulated through shared file paths. Common workloads include:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Images, documents, and other content served to websites or distributed to users.
- Video and audio streaming, logs, and large collections of unstructured data.
- Backup, restore, disaster recovery, and long-term archive.
- Data lakes, analytics, and other big-data workloads.
- Cloud applications and immutable-storage use cases.
These are common fits, not guarantees that every object service or configuration meets a particular application’s consistency, latency, or access requirements. AWS and Microsoft both describe object storage for several of these patterns: AWS storage services overview and Azure Blob Storage overview.
When should you use cloud file storage?
File storage is usually the better first option when an application expects a shared directory structure, file paths, or SMB/NFS operations. Examples include shared team folders, home directories, and traditional applications such as ERP or content-management systems. It can also suit some database and custom-application workloads, depending on their requirements. AWS’s storage guidance discusses shared file systems for applications that depend on them: AWS storage services overview.

Access pattern matters. In its comparison specifically for NFS access, Microsoft describes Azure Files as suitable for random-access workloads and Azure Blob Storage as suited to large-scale, read-heavy sequential data that is ingested once and changed minimally. That guidance is scoped to the NFS comparison; it is not a universal performance ranking of all file and object products: Azure Blob Storage and Azure Files comparison for NFS access.
How to choose for your workload
- Check application compatibility. If the software requires file paths, directory operations, or an SMB/NFS mount, evaluate file services first. If it can call an object API, object storage may be a better fit. Replacing file operations with API calls can require application changes; shared file systems may help avoid them. See AWS storage services overview and Azure Blob Storage overview.
- Describe how data is accessed and changed. Determine whether reads are mostly sequential or random, whether data is read repeatedly, and how often it changes. Microsoft’s Azure NFS guidance distinguishes large, read-heavy, minimally modified sequential data from random-access workloads, within that specific comparison: Azure NFS comparison.
- Set measurable performance requirements. Specify acceptable latency, IOPS, throughput, concurrency, and file-size distribution. Decide whether performance must be provisioned in advance or can scale with usage. Microsoft’s HPC guidance uses data volume, CPU core count, and file size to narrow storage choices, while emphasizing trade-offs between cost and performance: Azure storage solutions for HPC workloads.
- Include protection and operations. Compare identity and access controls, backup, redundancy, replication, lifecycle and archival behavior, and the work required to migrate existing applications and data. Microsoft’s cross-cloud comparison covers controls such as IAM or bucket policies, Azure firewall controls, pre-signed URLs, shared access signatures, and regional redundancy choices: AWS services compared to Azure services.
- Estimate the full cost for the actual deployment. Include capacity, provisioned performance where applicable, requests or data access, retrieval, redundancy, and transfer. Use current prices for the intended region and a realistic estimate of use. Microsoft’s HPC guidance distinguishes pay-for-use Blob options from provisioned Files and NetApp offerings, but it does not establish a universal cost winner: Azure storage solutions for HPC workloads.
What about hybrid designs and file-like access to objects?
The boundary is not absolute. Azure documents NFS 3.0 access to Blob Storage under applicable configurations, while AWS describes S3 Files as a file system connected directly to S3 data. These are product-specific options, not proof that object storage generally behaves like a full-purpose shared file system. Before relying on one, verify supported protocols, file-operation semantics, availability in your region, and billing: Azure Blob Storage overview and AWS storage services overview.

Workload examples
| Workload | Likely starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Website serving images or documents | Object storage | Content can often be retrieved through an object API and delivered broadly. |
| Log archive or analytics lake | Object storage | These commonly involve large collections of unstructured data for retention or analysis. |
| Shared team or home directory | File storage | Users and applications need shared folders and familiar file operations. |
| Legacy application expecting SMB or NFS | File storage | The application depends on file-system semantics; an object API may require code changes. |
| High-performance computing | Workload-specific; may combine durable storage with a cache or accelerator | Data volume, file sizes, CPU core count, throughput, and cost shape the design. See Microsoft’s Azure HPC guidance. |
What to compare before committing
- Application interface: object API, SMB, or NFS.
- Sequential versus random access, read/write frequency, and how often data changes.
- Latency, IOPS, throughput, concurrency, capacity, and file-size distribution.
- Availability, access controls, backup, replication, and lifecycle policies.
- Migration effort and the operational skills needed to manage the service.
- Full regional cost, including access, retrieval, performance provisioning, and transfer charges.
Provider guidance does not establish a market-wide statistic or universal performance or price winner for these storage models. Service results depend on the specific product, access mode, and configuration; validate requirements against current service documentation and regional pricing.
