Yes. During Mars’s predawn passage through the Beehive Cluster (M44) on October 11, 2026, binoculars can show the planet and the cluster together in a wide-field view. A pair of 10×50 binoculars is recommended for the scene. Your local viewing time and how high the pair appears depend on your location.
When and where to look
Mars passes through M44 in the predawn sky on October 11, 2026. In October, Mars is a morning object: look low toward the east-northeast after midnight, then watch it climb higher toward dawn. The precise clock time and altitude vary with your location, so check a local sky chart for your observing site.
The event is a close pairing from our viewpoint, not a physical meeting. Mars and the distant star cluster only appear near one another in the sky.
What binoculars can show
M44 is about 1.5 degrees across—roughly the width of three full moons. Binoculars can resolve around 20 of its stars, while still showing a broad enough field to frame the cluster with Mars. October 2026 observing guidance recommends 10×50 binoculars for this view.

Do not expect binoculars to reveal Martian surface detail: the supported view is Mars beside the cluster, with stars in M44 resolved against the background.

- Choose a dark location: Dark skies improve the contrast of M44’s stars. NASA skywatching presenter Chelsea Gohd notes, “With dark skies you might be able to spot the beehive with just your eyes, but binoculars or a small telescope will help.”
- Watch for moonlight and haze: Bright moonlight, haze, and local light pollution can wash out the cluster’s fainter stars.
- Check local conditions: A sky chart can help with the time and altitude at your location; weather determines whether the sky is clear enough to observe.
What the Beehive Cluster is
M44 is an open star cluster about 600 light-years from Earth. NASA describes it as containing about 1,000 stars and being around 600–700 million years old. Those distances also put the apparent pairing in perspective: Mars is much closer to Earth than the cluster, even when both fit in the same binocular view.
