It is a much harder value to justify if you are satisfied with a standard PS5 or would need to stretch your budget. Sony’s current U.S. recommended price is $899.99, effective April 2, 2026; physical-game buyers also need to budget for a separately sold disc drive.
What the PS5 Pro improves—and what it does not promise
Sony describes the PS5 Pro as having an upgraded GPU, more advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its machine-learning upscaling technology. In compatible games, Sony says the console can combine ray tracing with PSSR-enhanced 4K output at 60 frames per second or up to 120 fps. These are capabilities for supported games, not a guarantee that every game runs at native 4K or a fixed frame rate. PSSR upscales an image; it should not be confused with native 4K rendering. That game-by-game qualification is central to the buying decision. The benefit depends on whether the titles you play have Pro enhancements and what those enhancements change. Some may offer a choice between a sharper image and a higher frame rate; others may gain less visibly. Sony announced an upgraded PSSR version in 2026, and its March update named games receiving it, so support and results vary by title. Sony’s March 2026 PSSR update provides the named-game details.
Sony said on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. That is a dated Sony count, not an independently audited current total. Sony’s February 2026 announcement describes the upgraded PSSR and the count reported then.

How much does the PS5 Pro cost now?
Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are $899.99 in the U.S., £789.99 in the U.K., €899.99 in Europe, and ¥137,980 in Japan. These are Sony’s regional recommended prices; retailer pricing can differ, so check local listings before comparing. Sony announced the revised prices on March 27, 2026.
Older launch prices are not current: Sony announced the PS5 Pro at $699.99 in the U.S., £699.99 in the U.K., €799.99 in Europe, and ¥119,980 in Japan in September 2024. Those historical figures should not be used as today’s expected price. Sony’s September 2024 launch announcement records the original recommended prices.

PS5 Pro vs. standard PS5: which is the better buy?
The Pro’s premium buys more performance potential, not a universal upgrade in every game. The standard PS5 is the more sensible choice when its image quality and performance already satisfy you, or when keeping the purchase price down matters more than improved graphics. For a first-time buyer, compare the actual local prices of both systems and include any required disc drive in the Pro’s total.

Sony’s 2024 launch announcement compared the Pro with the then-current PS5, citing 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster rendering. These are Sony’s hardware comparisons, not a promise of a matching performance increase in every game. Will your screen and games show the difference?
A 4K display is the most direct match for the Pro’s advertised 4K output. A higher-refresh-rate display and variable refresh rate (VRR) can matter if you want smoother high-frame-rate play, but the game must support the relevant mode and your display must support the feature. The console cannot make a game’s unsupported enhancement appear, and a screen cannot show a feature it does not support.
- Check the games you play most for PS5 Pro enhancements and what each enhanced mode changes.
- Decide whether you value image detail, frame rate, ray tracing, or a balance more; the available choices differ by game.
- Match those priorities to your display’s resolution, refresh rate, and VRR support.
What else comes with the Pro?
The PS5 Pro has a 2TB solid-state drive and includes a DualSense wireless controller. Sony also lists Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, with support for Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 routers; taking advantage of enhanced wireless features requires a compatible router and suitable network. Its product page says the console can play over 8,500 PS4 games, and Game Boost can improve frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games—not necessarily all of them. Do you need to add the disc drive?
The PS5 Pro does not include a built-in disc drive. Sony sells a compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately. Add that purchase to your comparison if you buy physical games or want to play 4K Blu-ray movies, and confirm current compatibility and local pricing before ordering. Digital-only buyers can leave the drive out of their budget. Sony’s launch announcement identifies the drive as a separate purchase.
Who should buy the PS5 Pro?
It is a stronger fit if
- You care about visual quality or smoother performance and can identify Pro-enhanced games you actually play.
- You have a suitable 4K display, and, for high-frame-rate play, a display that supports the refresh rate and features you want.
- The premium over a standard PS5 is acceptable after including a separately purchased drive if you need one.
A standard PS5 is likely the better value if
- You are happy with your current PS5 and its performance.
- You are buying your first console and would rather spend less than pay extra for game-specific enhancements.
- You are unsure whether your usual games or display will make the Pro’s improvements noticeable.
For an existing PS5 owner, begin with your own game library and screen rather than the hardware claims in isolation. For a first-time buyer, compare the complete cost of each model in your region. The right choice follows from the games and display you will use—not from assuming that every title receives the same uplift.
