Choose a spot Bitcoin ETP if you want Bitcoin price exposure through a brokerage account and do not want to manage Bitcoin keys or transfers yourself. Buy Bitcoin directly if you want control of Bitcoin in a wallet—or want to choose a crypto custodian—and are prepared to manage the associated platform, transfer, and security responsibilities. Neither approach removes Bitcoin’s volatility, and the better fit depends on how you want to hold and use the asset.
What you own with each option
Spot Bitcoin ETP: an investment product
In everyday conversation, these products are often called Bitcoin ETFs. The more precise general term is spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP): you buy shares or units through a brokerage account, and the product is designed to provide exposure to Bitcoin’s price. Its specific legal structure depends on the product.
The terminology matters. The SEC’s September 2024 investor bulletin explains that spot Bitcoin and Ether products may use “ETF” in their names or be called ETFs, although the label may not precisely describe their structure. For example, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust says it is not an investment company registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Check the current prospectus and legal disclosures for the particular product rather than assuming every product called an ETF has the same structure.
Direct purchase: Bitcoin held through a wallet or custodian
When you buy Bitcoin directly, you acquire Bitcoin through a crypto platform or wallet arrangement. You may hold it yourself in a wallet, or rely on a third-party custodian or platform. With self-custody, you control the wallet’s keys; with a custodian, that provider handles custody under its arrangement with you.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An ETP share is not the same as Bitcoin in a wallet. Owning the share does not give you the same direct ability to control Bitcoin, transfer it to a wallet, or use it on-chain. Fidelity notes that FBTC’s performance will not reflect the specific return a person would realize by buying Bitcoin directly.
Compare the practical trade-offs
| Question | Spot Bitcoin ETP | Bitcoin bought directly |
|---|---|---|
| What do you hold? | Shares or units in a product intended to provide Bitcoin price exposure; the legal structure varies by product. | Bitcoin held under your wallet control or through a crypto platform or custodian. |
| How do you access it? | Through a brokerage account and the product’s exchange-trading mechanics. Availability and account eligibility vary. | Through a crypto platform or wallet path. Features and availability vary by provider. |
| Who handles Bitcoin keys? | The product’s service providers handle custody of the underlying Bitcoin; you do not personally manage those Bitcoin keys. | You manage keys in self-custody or rely on an outside custodian, each with different responsibilities and risks. |
| What costs may apply? | A sponsor fee, plus any brokerage trading costs. Check the current prospectus and brokerage fee schedule. | Platform transaction charges or spreads, and potentially custody, transfer, setup, or closure fees. Check the provider’s fee schedule. |
| Can you transfer or use Bitcoin? | Holding ETP shares does not provide wallet-level control or on-chain use of the Bitcoin. | Wallet-level control and transfers may be possible, subject to the platform, custody arrangement, and network. |
| What risks remain? | Bitcoin price volatility, tracking and expense effects, and product, sponsor, and custodian risks. | Bitcoin price volatility, plus platform, custody, key-loss, and transaction risks. |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a claim that one route always costs less. Product fees, platform charges, spreads, and custody arrangements can change, so use current disclosures and fee schedules.

How fees differ—and what to check
The SEC says spot Bitcoin ETPs generally pay a sponsor fee that direct holders do not pay. That does not make direct ownership automatically free: a platform may charge transaction or transfer fees, build costs into a spread, or charge for custody, account setup, or closure. A custodian’s charges may include annual asset-based fees as well as transaction and asset-transfer fees.
- For an ETP: Check the current prospectus for the sponsor fee and your brokerage’s schedule for trading costs.
- For a direct purchase: Check the platform’s transaction charges and spread, plus any custody, transfer, setup, or closure fees that apply to your chosen arrangement.
- For either route: Consider how often you expect to trade and which services you need. A fee comparison is meaningful only when it reflects your actual provider and use.
Custody: convenience versus control
With an ETP, custody is handled by the product’s service providers
You use brokerage infrastructure rather than managing the underlying Bitcoin’s wallet keys. This avoids personal key management, but it means relying on the product’s sponsor and service providers, including its custody arrangements. Read the product’s disclosures to understand those dependencies.

With direct Bitcoin, choose between self-custody and a custodian
Self-custody gives you control of the wallet keys, along with responsibility for keeping them safe and preserving access. A lost or exposed recovery phrase can create serious problems. The SEC’s crypto asset custody bulletin advises investors to secure their seed phrase and not share it. A hardware wallet is an optional physical tool for cold storage—not a requirement or a guarantee of safety—and the device itself typically costs money. If you choose a custodian instead, review its custody practices, fees, and terms; delegating key management does not eliminate provider risk.
Neither route makes Bitcoin safe
Both choices leave you exposed to Bitcoin’s market volatility. An ETP also has product-specific risks, including tracking and expense effects and reliance on its sponsor and service providers. Direct ownership adds operational risks tied to the platform, custody choice, key security, and transactions. The SEC’s investor bulletin advises investors to weigh carefully the potential risks and benefits of products providing Bitcoin exposure; Fidelity likewise describes crypto funds as highly volatile and potentially illiquid.

SEC approval of listing and trading was not an endorsement of Bitcoin or of a product’s custody arrangements. In its January 10, 2024 statement, then-Chair Gary Gensler wrote, “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.”

- Consider an ETP if brokerage access and avoiding personal Bitcoin key management are your priorities, and you accept product fees and reliance on the sponsor and service providers.
- Consider direct ownership if wallet-level control or the ability to transfer Bitcoin matters to you, and you are willing to choose and manage a platform or custody arrangement.
- Pause before either choice if you have not assessed whether Bitcoin’s volatility fits your financial situation, or you have not checked the current costs and disclosures for the specific route you would use.
Tax treatment depends on your situation
This comparison does not establish that either route is tax-superior. Tax treatment can depend on your jurisdiction, account type, and individual circumstances. Consult current tax guidance for your location or a qualified tax professional before making a decision.
