If a submitted e-way bill has incorrect invoice, consignment or party information, the GST E-Way Bill System FAQ says you cannot edit it: cancel the bill and generate a new one with the correct details. The FAQ specifies cancellation within 24 hours of generation. A changed vehicle number is different: update the transport details in Part B, provided the bill is still within validity and the current portal rules allow the update.
How do I correct a wrong e-way bill?
First identify what is wrong. Submitted invoice, consignment or party data follows the cancellation-and-regeneration route. A vehicle or other transport-detail change follows the Part-B route. The GST E-Way Bill System FAQ states: “If there is a mistake, incorrect or wrong entry in the e-way bill, then it cannot be edited or corrected. Only option is cancellation of eway bill and generate a new one with correct details.” See the GST E-Way Bill System FAQ.
The same FAQ says cancellation is required within 24 hours from generation. Act promptly, and check the live portal and applicable rules if that window has passed; do not assume the submitted bill can still be edited. Portal labels and steps can change, so use the current e-way bill portal for the cancellation and replacement process.
Can I edit an e-way bill after generating it?
Not to correct submitted non-transport information, according to the FAQ. The indicated route is to cancel the incorrect bill within the stated time and generate a new one with accurate details. Compare the replacement bill with the underlying invoice, bill of supply, delivery challan or other applicable transport document before relying on it.

| Changed vehicle or other transport detail | Update Part B through the generator or assigned transporter | API guidance says the bill must be within validity; check current rules and portal behavior |
What should I do if the vehicle number is wrong?
If the vehicle genuinely changed—for example, because of a breakdown or trans-shipment—use the Part-B transport-detail update route rather than treating it as an invoice-data correction. The GST E-Way Bill System FAQ describes updating vehicle details after such a change. The updated information should identify the vehicle actually carrying the goods.
Official API guidance limits vehicle-detail updates to an e-way bill that is within validity. It does not establish that an expired bill can be repaired with a simple Part-B edit. Check the bill’s live status and current portal guidance before moving the goods. The relevant guidance is on the official FAQ and the official e-way bill API documentation.

Can I update Part B after a vehicle breakdown?
The FAQ indicates that the generator or the transporter assigned to the bill can update the vehicle details following a breakdown or trans-shipment. Confirm that the update is accepted and that the bill remains within validity. For road movement, the API documentation says a vehicle number is required in the prescribed format. For movement by rail, air or ship, it specifies a transport-document number instead.
These are mode-dependent fields, so check that the entry matches the actual mode of movement and the portal’s accepted format. Do not enter a road vehicle number as a substitute for the applicable transport-document number on a non-road movement.

What happens if my e-way bill expires before delivery?
E-way bill validity is based on approximate distance and transport mode. The GST E-Way Bill System FAQ says the validity period begins with the first Part-B transport entry. Because official FAQ versions have surfaced with differing distance increments, there is no single numerical formula to rely on here. Check the current portal display, applicable notifications and governing rules for the movement in question rather than using an older online example.
CBIC rules address exceptional circumstances and generation of another e-way bill after updating Part B. The appropriate action depends on the facts and the current rule, so consult the current CBIC CGST Rules and portal guidance. Do not assume that a Part-B change automatically restores validity or that an expired bill can be extended by editing it.

How should I handle a portal error code?
Write down the exact error code and message, then look it up in the current official e-way bill error-code list or portal help. The list includes validity-lapse and transport-data errors, but a code should not be treated as a complete remedy by itself: follow the current guidance for that specific message and bill status.
