To reduce VR streaming lag, first find out whether the problem is limited to one game or affects every PC VR app. Then test the local network, lower the stream load, and check PC rendering and encoding separately. There is no single bitrate or router upgrade that fixes every cause: a delayed or juddering stream can come from network congestion, game performance, encoding, or headset-side processing.
First, work out where the stutter happens
Before changing settings, note your headset, streaming app, game, PC specifications, and whether the PC connects to the router by Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Then check whether the stutter appears in just one game, across multiple PC VR apps, or even in the headset interface.
- One game only: Start by investigating that game’s rendering load and settings.
- Several PC VR apps: Check the stream, PC performance, and local network.
- The headset interface too: The issue may not be limited to PC-to-headset streaming.
This narrows the next test; it cannot identify the cause of a specific setup remotely.
Check the local network and reduce stream load
Confirm the connection basics
For Steam Link, Steam’s FAQ search result specifies a 5 GHz channel, Wi-Fi 5 minimum, Steam and SteamVR installed on the PC, and the headset and host PC on the same network. The FAQ body was not available when checked, so consult the current Steam Link FAQ to confirm requirements before relying on them.

If practical, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet while the headset uses Wi-Fi. This removes the PC’s wireless link from the path, but will not fix a game-rendering, encoding, or headset-decoding bottleneck.
Reduce contention before buying equipment
Pause large downloads and other wireless video or music streams while testing. Steam also recommends checking router or modem firmware and notes that other wireless network activity can interfere with streaming. A Wi-Fi 6 router is not a guaranteed fix: first check your current network, headset compatibility, and access-point placement. Steam’s cited minimum for Steam Link is Wi-Fi 5, not Wi-Fi 6.

Lower Steam Link quality and adjust bandwidth gradually
- In Steam Link, set streaming quality to Fast for a lower-load test.
- Start with the lowest bandwidth setting, then increase it until the problem returns.
- Step back to the last setting that worked. Choose Automatic to restore Steam Link’s default bandwidth behavior.
Steam’s gradual-adjustment advice applies to Steam Link. It is not a universal bitrate recommendation for Air Link or other streaming apps. Avoid adopting a bitrate number from someone else as a guaranteed setting for your connection.
Check PC performance and background software
Close or pause background tasks that are competing for PC resources or network capacity, then retest. Steam lists MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics, Razer Synapse, ASUS AI Suite, ZoneAlarm, Skype or Skypehost, cloud-sync tools, and screen-capture software among programs that have caused issues for some users. Treat these as candidates, not proven causes: test one at a time and reopen anything you need.

Also check whether large file transfers or video and music streaming are active. If the problem changes after stopping one task, that gives you a more useful clue than changing several VR settings at once.
Use Meta’s diagnostics to separate timing problems
For Meta Link, the Oculus Debug Tool can display latency timing, app-render timing, compositor-render timing, ASW statistics, Link details, and network guardian information. These views can help distinguish a PC rendering delay from a link or network issue. Meta’s documentation says to run the tool from the installed Meta Horizon directory so its version matches the distribution.

Change encoder settings cautiously. Meta warns that a high encode bitrate can cause instability and that a larger dynamic bitrate offset can make lags and stalls more visible. Meta’s March 15, 2022 article on Air Link Framerate Insurance (AFI) describes an experimental mitigation for visual artifacts from short bursts of late frames caused by wireless degradation. It may stop applying when multiple frames in a row are dropped, so it is not a repair for a persistently poor connection. The article’s original requirements were Quest 2, PC and Quest software v38 or later, and USB Link or Air Link; it also said AFI was disabled by default and unsupported at 120 Hz in that release. Because those details come from an older experimental-feature article, check Meta’s AFI article and current software settings before looking for the feature or relying on it.

When should you change hardware or streaming routes?
Consider an Ethernet cable for the PC-to-router connection when the host currently relies on Wi-Fi and network testing points to that link as a limitation. Consider a router or access-point change only after checking your current connection, placement, and compatibility. Neither purchase is established as a fix for rendering or encoding problems.
Air Link, Steam Link, and other routes should be compared on the specific headset and app support, network requirements, available quality controls, and diagnostic visibility. No comparative benchmark establishes one route as categorically fastest. If stutter follows one app, investigate that route’s settings; if it follows every app, broaden the diagnosis to the network and PC.
