Look first for a guitar that fits your hands and playing posture, plays cleanly, and stays in tune. Then compare its pickups and controls, scale length, bridge, construction, and included support. A high price or ornate finish cannot tell you whether a particular instrument is comfortable or right for your music.
Start with fit and playability
Specifications can help narrow a search, but they cannot predict how a guitar will feel to you. Try the instrument in the position you normally play—seated, standing, or both—and check how its neck, body, and controls work together.
- Neck and reach: Notice the neck profile, how your hand wraps around it, and whether reaching across the fretboard feels natural.
- Balance and weight: Check whether the guitar sits comfortably and stays in place on a strap, rather than tilting or pulling in a way that distracts you.
- Fretwork: Run your hand along the fretboard edges and play across the neck. Fret edges should not feel uncomfortably sharp.
- Bends and clean notes: Bend strings at several positions and listen for notes that buzz, choke out, or fail to ring clearly.
- Tuning and controls: Play normally, check whether the guitar remains in tune, and operate every switch and knob to make sure its position and action suit you.
- Upper-fret access: Play high notes you use in your music and see whether the body and neck joint make them comfortable to reach.
A well-known brand or premium price is not a substitute for a clean setup and a good fit. PRS says its Core process includes fretwork, neck shaping, final setup, and inspection; that is the manufacturer’s description of its own range, not independent proof that all premium guitars are equivalent. Compare scale length and string feel
Scale length is the distance between the nut and bridge. It determines fret spacing and influences string feel: according to PRS, shorter scales need less string tension to reach pitch, while longer scales need more. That guidance can help you compare instruments, but it does not establish that one scale length sounds better. Try the actual guitar if possible. PRS guidance on scale length
#1 Best Overall
- Solidbody Electric Guitar with Alder Body
- 1 Single-coil Pickup
- Edge Tremolo - White
- 2 Humbucker Pickups
- Maple/Walnut Neck
For example, PRS lists the SE Custom 24 at 25 inches, while Gibson lists the Les Paul Supreme at 24.75 inches. These measurements identify differences between those models; neither tells you which will feel better in your hands. PRS SE Custom 24 specifications · Gibson Les Paul Supreme specifications
Neck profile, fingerboard radius, and fret dimensions also matter to the feel of a neck. Compare them on the exact models you are considering, then let your playing comfort—not a specification considered in isolation—settle the question.

Choose electronics for the sounds and controls you use
Compare the actual pickups, selector positions, and volume and tone controls, including any coil-split, coil-tap, phase, or bypass options. Consider whether you will use those options with your playing style and equipment; a longer feature list is not automatically more useful.
The Gibson Les Paul Supreme listing specifies Burstbucker Pro humbuckers and push/pull controls for coil tap, phase, and bypass functions. The PRS SE Custom 24 listing specifies 85/15 S pickups, a push/pull tone control, and a three-way blade selector. These are different implementations, not evidence that one pickup configuration is universally better. Gibson Les Paul Supreme specifications · PRS SE Custom 24 specifications

Verify the exact model and year
Do not assume that every guitar in a brand’s product family shares the same materials, electronics, finish, or place of manufacture. Check the specification page for the exact model and year, and confirm details with the seller if the individual instrument’s listing is unclear.
PRS’s specification FAQ describes differences across its ranges. It says Maryland-made models have used nitrocellulose lacquer beginning in 2023, while SE models use acrylic urethane. It also says S2 models beginning in 2024 have Maryland-made pickups and electronics; S2 models from 2024 and earlier may have S pickups and SE electronics. Those details are specific to the ranges and dates PRS describes, not a rule for other brands. PRS guitar specification FAQ

PRS also describes woods, fretwork, pickups, finish, setup, and hardware as priorities for its Core range. Treat these as the manufacturer’s account of its own design and production choices, then evaluate the particular guitar yourself. PRS Core buyer guide
