If your lights are not reacting properly to music, first confirm the selected sound mode and audio source. Then adjust microphone sensitivity or gain, as appropriate. If you use computer-controlled DMX lighting, trace the full audio-to-light signal path; if lights flicker, test the fixture without DMX to separate signal problems from possible fixture faults. The right checks depend on whether your lights use a built-in microphone, an app, or a computer and DMX controller.
Identify how your lights listen to music
Audio-reactive lighting generally uses one of two setups. A standalone sound-active fixture listens through its built-in microphone and uses local mode and sensitivity controls. An app- or computer-controlled setup uses a phone, control-box microphone, or computer audio input; computer-based systems may also route commands through software, a USB-to-DMX interface, and a DMX chain.
| Setup | Audio source and controls | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone sound-active fixture | Built-in microphone; local sound mode and sensitivity settings. | Sound mode, microphone obstruction or placement, and sensitivity. |
| App-controlled lighting | Phone or control-box microphone, depending on the app and controller. | Sound input enabled, correct microphone selected, gain, and any required network connection. |
| Computer-controlled DMX lighting | Computer audio input and routing or lighting software, followed by an interface and DMX signal chain. | Input and routing, software load, interface, DMX cable path, addresses, and fixture configuration. |
Start with the controls for your specific setup rather than assuming every light has the same sound mode, menu labels, sensitivity range, or connections.
If the lights do not react to music
Check sound mode and input selection
- On a fixture with an onboard microphone, select its sound-active mode. Check that the microphone is not covered or blocked. Rockville’s Stage Panel 336 guidance also calls for checking microphone sensitivity; the 1–15 range described there applies to that model, not to lights generally. Rockville Stage Panel 336 controls and inputs.
- In an app, confirm sound input is enabled and select the intended source, such as the phone microphone or control-box microphone. ASAHOM says its phone-microphone option requires the phone and controller to be on the same Wi-Fi network. ASAHOM Studio – Audio RX.
- If you use computer software, confirm it is listening to the input that actually receives the music. A selected but silent microphone or virtual input will not trigger the lights.
Adjust sensitivity or gain gradually
If ordinary music produces little or no response, increase sensitivity or gain a small amount and test again. If room noise triggers effects when the music is quiet or stopped, reduce it. Rockville describes higher sensitivity as allowing its Stage Panel 336 to respond to quieter sounds, and documents sound modes and sensitivity adjustment for its Best Strip 60. Those are product-specific controls; consult your fixture or app instructions for the correct setting. Rockville Best Strip 60 setup and use.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sound response can also vary with the song and selected mode. ASAHOM notes that variation for its app, so a different response to different tracks does not by itself establish a fault.
If the lights lag behind the music
Trace a computer-to-DMX setup from input to fixture
In a computer-controlled system, perceived delay can arise at several points: the audio input or buffer, virtual audio-routing software, lighting software, the USB-to-DMX interface, the DMX chain, or the fixture. ENTTEC identifies large audio buffers, virtual-routing applications, and an overloaded laptop as possible sources of lag. ENTTEC: How to Make Lights React to Music (DMX + Free Software).

- Verify that the lighting software receives the intended audio input and that its meter or input indicator responds to music, if available.
- Review audio-buffer and routing settings. Where your setup permits, reduce unnecessary buffering or virtual-routing stages, changing one setting at a time so you can identify its effect.
- Check whether the computer is under heavy load and close unnecessary applications before comparing the response again.
- If supported by your equipment, compare the result using a direct or line input instead of the current routed audio source.
- Follow the output through the software, USB-to-DMX interface, DMX cable chain, and fixture configuration. Confirm compatibility among the fixtures, interface, and software.
ENTTEC reports that transmitting a full 512-channel DMX frame takes about 23 ms on the wire at 250 kbit/s. That is the transmission time for a full frame, not a measurement of total audio-to-light latency; it should not be treated as a typical end-to-end delay for every system. Audio-reactive analysis also should not be assumed to provide frame-accurate choreography.
If the lights flicker
Separate DMX signal trouble from fixture trouble
For a DMX-controlled fixture, ADJ recommends disconnecting DMX and testing the fixture in standalone or sound-active mode. If it stops flickering without DMX, inspect the DMX chain, including cable condition, termination at the end of the chain, and address conflicts. ADJ LED flicker troubleshooting.

If the flicker continues in standalone mode and is random rather than following a pattern—particularly when it is limited to certain LEDs—ADJ says an LED driver or LED failure may be a cause. That symptom is not enough to identify a failed part remotely; consult the manufacturer’s model-specific service guidance or a qualified repair provider.
Check cabling, addresses, and channel mode
For linked fixtures, check that DMX OUT feeds the next fixture’s DMX IN, and verify each address and channel mode against the control plan and exact fixture manual. Rockville’s Best Strip 60 instructions include address, channel-mode, and connection checks for its wired and wireless setups. DMX settings and required topology vary by product, so do not copy a menu value or wiring arrangement from another model. Never connect audio equipment to DMX ports; use the audio input and DMX connections designated in the manuals for your equipment.

If the lights have stopped responding entirely
- Check that the fixture or controller has power and that the intended operating mode is selected.
- For sound-active operation, check the microphone path, selected audio source, and sensitivity or gain.
- For app control, confirm sound input is enabled, the correct microphone is selected, and any network requirement for that source is met.
- For DMX control, inspect the full cable path and confirm the controller configuration, address, and channel mode match the fixture and control plan.
- If individual LEDs continue to flicker randomly in standalone mode, stop treating the issue as a settings problem and seek model-specific service advice.
When to use a different audio-reactive setup
A built-in microphone setup has fewer components between sound and light, but its response depends on the fixture’s microphone, its placement, and local sensitivity settings. An app- or computer-controlled setup can offer more choices of audio source and control, but adds more points to verify: source selection, network or software routing, interface compatibility, and potentially a DMX chain.
Choose based on the inputs your equipment supports, the amount of control you need, the number of components you are willing to configure, and how much delay your use can tolerate. A USB-to-DMX interface is relevant only when using compatible DMX fixtures with computer-based lighting control; it is not a general remedy for an app-controlled LED strip or a blocked built-in microphone.
