Before playing or adjusting a guitar delivered by mail, check the carton and contents, let the instrument adjust if it has come through a major temperature or humidity change, then inspect its condition and basic function. Photograph any damage or missing items and follow the seller’s current reporting procedure.
1. Check the carton and packing
Before throwing anything away, look for a crushed corner, puncture, tear, or other sign of impact. If you find damage, photograph the carton and packing as well as the guitar, and keep the packaging while you contact the seller. Reporting procedures and deadlines vary by seller, carrier, and order, so use the instructions associated with your purchase rather than assuming a universal deadline.
2. Match the order and check what was included
Compare the guitar with your order and the listing: confirm the model and visible specifications, and check whether the expected case or gig bag and accessories are present. Inspect the case inside and out, too. A missing item or a mismatch is easier to report when you have the order details and packing available.
3. Let the guitar adjust to its new environment
If the instrument has travelled through conditions substantially different from the room where you will keep it, give it time to adjust before judging its setup or changing anything. Temperature and humidity changes can affect wood: Fender explains that wood absorbs moisture and expands or contracts as conditions change, and notes that a new instrument can need a settling-in period (Fender’s guitar-care guidance).

There is no universal waiting time established for every shipment or instrument. Sweetwater describes allowing 24 hours before handling a guitar at its climate-controlled facility; that is the retailer’s own process, not a mandatory rule for every buyer (Sweetwater’s inspection-process description). Avoid making a setup judgment while the instrument is still adjusting.
4. Inspect the guitar’s condition
In good light, compare the instrument with the listing and look over the whole guitar. Sweetwater’s retailer-specific inspection checklist covers many of these areas; it is a useful example, not an industry-wide standard (Sweetwater’s guitar inspection checklist).

- Body and finish: Look for cracks, dents, finish damage, or impact marks.
- Neck, neck joint, and headstock: Check for visible cracks, shifting, or other damage.
- Fingerboard, frets, and nut: Look for obvious defects or anything that differs from the listing.
- Bridge, tuners, strap buttons, and other hardware: Check that parts are present and appear secure, not loose or bent.
- Case or gig bag: Check its exterior and interior for damage, and confirm that it is the one included with the order.
Do not try to repair a suspected shipping defect before documenting it and asking the seller how to proceed.
5. Test basic playability
Once the guitar has adjusted, tune it to pitch and try it gently. The goal is to find obvious problems, not to make the instrument match your personal preferences.

- Check that the tuners turn and hold the strings at pitch.
- Play notes along the fretboard and try bends; listen for unusually persistent buzzing or notes that do not sound clearly.
- Look at string and saddle position, neck relief, and action, and check intonation at a basic level if you know how. Sweetwater includes these kinds of checks in its inspection process (checklist details).
An inspection and a setup are different. Sweetwater describes inspection as checking an instrument against manufacturer tolerances, while a setup tailors string choice and action to a player’s preferences (Sweetwater’s inspection-versus-setup explanation). A guitar can pass an inspection and still need a setup to suit how you play.
6. Test electronics, if the guitar has them
For an electric guitar or an amplified acoustic, connect it to a suitable amplifier and check the output jack, volume and tone controls, switches, and pickup selections. If it has onboard electronics, test the preamp and tuner as well. A fault that appears only when plugged in may not be apparent during an unplugged check; Sweetwater’s checklist includes these functions (electronics checks).

7. Record concerns and decide what to do
If you find damage, a mismatch, missing contents, or a function that does not work, take clear photos and make a short note of what you observed and when. Contact the seller promptly through the damage, return, or support process for your order, and keep the carton and packing until you know what they require. Avoid adjustments that could complicate the seller’s evaluation.
If the concern is about playability rather than visible shipping damage, ask the seller or a qualified guitar technician before attempting an adjustment you are not confident making. Truss-rod procedures vary by instrument; Fender advises consulting the owner’s manual for the particular guitar and its adjustment procedure (Fender’s truss-rod guidance). A truss-rod turn is not a routine first check.
