Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is a feature for supported PlayStation 5 Pro games. AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a broader family of features for supported PC games and hardware; AMD now calls its machine-learning upscaler FSR Upscaling, formerly FSR 4. Neither technology is established as the universal image-quality winner: the result depends on the game, implementation, settings, hardware, and what you notice in motion.
What is the difference between PSSR and AMD FSR?
Both technologies aim to produce a higher-resolution output without rendering every pixel at that output resolution natively. They analyze lower-resolution game imagery and reconstruct detail, which can help a game balance image quality and rendering performance. The key distinction is scope: PSSR is Sony’s upscaling library for PS5 Pro, while FSR is AMD’s multi-feature technology family used in supported games on eligible hardware.

What PSSR does on PS5 Pro
Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. Its February 2026 announcement said PSSR had been used in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. That is Sony’s count as of the announcement, not a continuously updated or independently audited total.
On March 16, 2026, Sony announced a substantially revised PSSR neural network and algorithm. Sony said the update was rolling out broadly to supported games and could also be enabled through an optional PS5 Pro system setting for games that already supported PSSR. The setting does not add PSSR support to a game that lacks it. Sony cautions that results can vary by title and says players can turn the enhancement off if it causes unexpected visual effects.

Sony characterizes the upgraded version as providing “enhanced image stability, improved clarity in fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.” Those are Sony’s stated benefits, not a matched independent test against FSR. Remedy Entertainment’s graphics technical director Tatu Aalto also said the upgrade improved upscaling quality and stability in the studio’s named games; that is a developer observation about those implementations, not a general PSSR-versus-FSR verdict.
What AMD FSR includes—and which hardware supports its ML upscaler
FSR is not one fixed upscaling mode. AMD’s current “Redstone” family groups FSR Upscaling, Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration, and Radiance Caching. FSR Upscaling is the current name for AMD’s ML-based upscaler previously called FSR 4. The features are distinct: in particular, frame generation creates additional frames and should not be mistaken for the upscaling process itself.

AMD’s current overview lists ML-based FSR Upscaling for Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. That timing is AMD’s stated plan, not a guarantee. AMD lists broader support for earlier FSR generations, but requirements differ by generation, feature, game, and configuration. Some supported configurations can enable features through a game or driver path; neither path makes every feature available in every game. Check AMD’s current FSR overview and the individual game’s supported settings before assuming compatibility.
For developers, AMD’s March 2026 FSR Redstone SDK article lists FSR Upscaling 4.1, Frame Generation 4.0.0, Ray Regeneration 1.1.0, and Radiance Caching 0.9 in preview. AMD also reports that FSR Upscaling renders 4K frames in approximately 1.3 milliseconds on a Radeon RX 9070 XT in Performance mode. That is a vendor-reported figure for the named GPU and mode, not a general performance result or a direct comparison with PSSR.

Does FSR work on PS5 Pro?
The available platform descriptions identify PSSR as the PS5 Pro upscaling feature; AMD’s FSR support information concerns compatible games and hardware, not a PS5 Pro setting. Do not assume a PlayStation game uses AMD FSR because FSR exists on PC, or that an FSR label on one platform means the same feature and implementation are present on another. For a console game, check the game’s platform-specific documentation and settings; for a PC game, check its supported FSR options and your GPU’s eligibility.
Which looks better: PSSR or FSR?
There is no substantiated universal winner in image quality or performance. Sony’s descriptions of upgraded PSSR and AMD’s descriptions of FSR explain intended benefits, but do not establish a controlled comparison under identical conditions. A result in one game cannot automatically be generalized to other games, patches, modes, or hardware.

When comparing a specific implementation, keep the following details together:
- Game and build: Use the same game version and note the patch, because rendering and upscaler implementations can change.
- Technology: Identify PSSR or the exact FSR feature and version. Do not group FSR Upscaling and Frame Generation together as if they do the same job.
- Platform and hardware: State PS5 Pro or the specific PC GPU, plus any relevant game or driver support path.
- Rendering conditions: Record internal resolution, output resolution, quality preset, and frame-generation state.
- What you inspect: Look at still-image detail and motion stability. Fine textures can appear sharp in a paused frame yet shimmer, blur, or break up during movement; check for temporal artifacts as well as edge detail.
- Performance context: Compare frame rate and latency separately, and identify whether frame generation is enabled. A vendor’s result on one GPU and mode is not a substitute for a matched comparison.
Which should you choose?
If you play on PS5 Pro
PSSR is the relevant option when a PS5 Pro game supports it. Try the game’s supported mode and, where available, the optional system-level enhancement for already-supported PSSR titles. If you see an unexpected visual effect, use Sony’s option to disable the enhancement for that game.

If you play on PC
Choose among the FSR options actually exposed by your game and supported by your hardware. Verify the exact feature: FSR Upscaling, Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration, and Radiance Caching have different purposes and requirements. A game’s own implementation and your GPU matter more than the FSR family name alone.
If image quality is your priority
Judge the game and mode you actually play rather than relying on a broad ranking. Compare the same scene in motion at the same output resolution, and weigh stability and artifacts alongside sharpness. The official claims currently available do not establish that PSSR or FSR looks better in every title.

Game support, GPU eligibility, and feature names can change, so use the current game and platform documentation when checking a particular setup.
