If PSSR looks unstable or a PS5 Pro game flickers, first check whether the issue is limited to one game or scene, follows the console across games and menus, or appears only with a display mode such as 4K/120 Hz. Then make one reversible setting change at a time: test the optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting for game-specific artifacts, and adjust video output settings for broader flicker or signal problems. There is no single confirmed fix for every PSSR performance complaint.

First identify where the problem occurs

Note the affected game, scene, and graphics mode, then check whether the same symptom appears elsewhere.

  • One game or scene: This points toward a title-specific rendering path or patch as a possibility, not a confirmed cause. Check the game’s updates and support notes, then test the PSSR setting below.
  • Several games or the PS5 interface: Display output, refresh-rate mode, or the connection deserves attention. Sony documents separate output controls, but does not publish a definitive symptom-to-cause chart.
  • Only during motion or with fine details: Compare the same scene and camera movement after changing the PSSR option. A controlled comparison is more useful than judging different scenes.
  • Only at 120 Hz, or a blank/intermittent picture at 4K/120 Hz: Follow the display-mode checks in the section on refresh rates and signal problems.

Test the optional PSSR image-quality setting

PSSR is a PS5 Pro upscaling feature, and its results vary by game. Sony says the optional system setting is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group and is on by default. To compare it:

  1. On a supported PS5 Pro, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality.
  2. Turn the setting off if you are seeing unexpected visual effects.
  3. Reopen the same game scene, use the same graphics mode, and compare the same camera movement.

If the image is better with the option off, you can leave it off for that title while checking for system software and game updates. Do not assume the setting will improve or worsen every supported game in the same way. Sony’s instructions and title-variation guidance are on its PS5 Pro PSSR support page.

Try Sony’s screen-flicker and refresh-rate checks

For flickering across the screen

Sony’s PS5 resolution guide recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2 if the screen flickers. These settings limit some output modes and color formats. Change one value at a time, check whether the symptom changes, and restore the original setting if it does not help.

For video-output problems in 120 Hz games

If a monitor or another display has video-output problems when playing 120 Hz games, Sony advises turning off 120 Hz Output. Treat this as a test: if it does not resolve the issue, restore the prior setting before trying another change.

For a 4K/120 Hz blank picture or handshake problem

Check the whole signal path rather than treating a cable as a fix for game-rendering artifacts:

  • Connect the PS5 to an HDMI 2.1 port on the TV.
  • Check the TV’s own HDMI settings.
  • Set PS5 resolution to Auto or 2160p.
  • Set Video Transfer Rate to Auto for this check.

Sony notes that 4K/120 Hz support is an evolving market capability and compatibility problems may occur. The HDMI cable supplied with the console is recommended; an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 is a compatible alternative for ALLM. A cable change is relevant to signal or compatibility problems, not a demonstrated repair for PSSR artifacts confined to one game’s image.

Update the game and system, then report persistent title-specific issues

Sony’s March 2026 announcement says upgraded PSSR support arrived through a PS5 system software update, with an optional system setting for existing compatible titles. Check for current system software and the affected game’s update; neither an update nor the setting is guaranteed to fix a particular artifact. Sony’s rollout details are in its March 2026 announcement.

If the problem persists only in one game, record the title, affected scene, selected graphics mode, and whether Enhance PSSR Image Quality is on. Use that information when contacting the game publisher or PlayStation Support. A title-specific patch note or support response may explain a game issue more directly than a console-wide output adjustment.

What upgraded PSSR does—and does not—guarantee

Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. In a February 27, 2026 announcement, Sony said it had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date”; that dated figure is not a current count of games supporting upgraded PSSR. The announcement and its scope are available from Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Square Enix’s director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth described naturally restored fine details, including character hair, and more stable image processing with less flickering and afterimage compared with original PSSR. That is a developer statement about that game, not a guarantee that every title will look or perform better. Sony likewise cautions that results vary by title; its upgraded PSSR announcement provides the rollout context.
