Don’t assume your visual novel demo save will carry over. Transfer support depends on the specific game, platform, account, and developer setup. Before buying, check the game’s official support instructions, confirm what progress transfers, and keep the demo save until you have successfully loaded it in the full game.
Check the exact game’s transfer policy
Start with the official store page, publisher FAQ, developer website, or recent patch notes for the game and platform you plan to use. Search for phrases such as “demo save,” “transfer progress,” “carry over,” and “continue from demo.” A publisher’s instructions for one title do not establish how another title works.
Official examples show why this check matters: some games offer a transfer prompt, while another Square Enix demo FAQ explicitly says its named demo’s save data cannot be carried over. See the relevant Square Enix demo FAQ and verify the policy for your own title.
Confirm what carries over and what must match
Platform, storefront, and account
Look for requirements that the demo and full game be on the same platform, storefront, account, or console. For example, Bandai Namco’s *Echoes of Aincrad* guide says transfer is possible only on the same platform. A separate Square Enix support example instructs players to use the account or console associated with the demo. These are title-specific conditions, not universal promises.

Story state versus unlocks
Check whether “progress” means resuming at the same scene with your choices, or only bringing over bonuses such as gallery unlocks. Those can be stored separately. Ren’Py, for instance, distinguishes ordinary save slots from persistent data, which developers can selectively share between games. An unlocked gallery therefore does not prove that the game can resume the demo’s route position.
Timing, prompts, and existing full-game saves
Read the transfer sequence before launching the full game. The game may need an update, may show a one-time prompt, or may require demo data to remain present. In one Square Enix support case, transfer is available only when no full-game save data already exists; for Steam Deck, that guidance says to enable Cloud Save Data for both the demo and full game. Another title-specific instruction uses the prompt label “Load Demo Saved Data.”

Do not create a new full-game save or dismiss a transfer prompt until you understand the publisher’s instructions. Keep the demo save intact until you have confirmed that the full game loaded the intended progress.
Understand what Steam Cloud can—and cannot—do
Steam Cloud syncs files that a game’s developer has configured, generally after the game exits; another computer can download synchronized files before launch. Steamworks also supports a developer setting for sharing cloud storage between app IDs, a feature commonly used to share demo and full-game saves. These are developer-facing capabilities, not a guarantee that every Steam demo uses compatible saves with its full game. Cloud being enabled does not establish that the two builds use the same files or that the full game can read them. Enable cloud settings when the game’s own instructions call for them.
If the visual novel uses Ren’Py
Ren’Py’s documentation says it tries to preserve save compatibility but does not guarantee it, even across releases. The developer can also configure the save directory, so finding a save file is not proof that another build can load it. Consult the Ren’Py save compatibility documentation and the game developer’s transfer instructions.

For diagnosis only, Ren’Py documents these default-style save locations; a game’s configuration can change the actual directory:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%/RenPy/<save_directory> - macOS:
~/Library/RenPy/<save_directory> - Linux and other platforms:
~/.renpy/<save_directory>
Ren’Py also offers Multi-Game Persistence, which lets developers intentionally share selected persistent values between games. That is not automatic migration of a complete save file. See the Ren’Py persistence documentation.

- Find the official transfer policy for the exact game, edition, and platform.
- Check whether the demo and full game must use the same platform, storefront, account, or console.
- Confirm whether transfer needs an update, a first-launch prompt, or the absence of an existing full-game save.
- Check whether the transfer includes route position and choices, or only separate unlocks and bonuses.
- Enable cloud settings only if the game’s instructions require them, and retain the demo save until transfer succeeds.
If the official support page does not explain transfer behavior, contact the publisher or developer before purchasing if carrying over progress is essential. Do not manually copy or alter save files unless the developer provides exact steps.
