The reported $547 million in crypto liquidations refers to a September 18, 2026 market move as Bitcoin crossed $81,000—not a verified oil-driven event. CoinGlass figures cited by The Daily Hodl show that shorts, rather than longs, made up most of the reported total. Separate October coverage reported $555.6 million in liquidations during a Bitcoin decline, with a sharply different long-short split.

What happened in the $547 million liquidation event?

On September 18, 2026, The Daily Hodl reported CoinGlass data showing $547 million in leveraged crypto positions liquidated over a 24-hour period as Bitcoin crossed $81,000. The reported breakdown was $469.19 million in short liquidations and $57.10 million in long liquidations. The report listed Bitcoin at $243.54 million, Ethereum at $95.66 million, and Solana at $36.29 million in liquidations. These are CoinGlass figures relayed through secondary reporting, not independently verified primary event data. The Daily Hodl’s report attributes the data to CoinGlass.

Were longs or shorts liquidated?

In the September 18 report, shorts accounted for most of the liquidations. A short position generally loses money when the asset’s price rises; if the position no longer meets its margin requirements, the exchange may forcibly close it. The $469.19 million in reported short liquidations alongside Bitcoin’s move above $81,000 is consistent with that mechanism, but the figures alone do not establish every trader’s position or the precise sequence of market moves.

How does the October liquidation report differ?

A separate report from The Block on October 6, 2026 described Bitcoin briefly dipping to around $83,800 and $555.6 million in crypto liquidations over 24 hours, including $487.2 million in longs. The Block said the pullback was primarily driven by profit-taking and forced long liquidations after open interest and funding rates had built up. It attributed this view to Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research. This was a different event from the September rally and its mostly short liquidations. The Block’s report also cautioned that publicly available liquidation data may significantly understate actual market liquidations.

Report Market move described Reported 24-hour liquidations Reported position split
September 18, 2026; CoinGlass figures reported by The Daily Hodl Bitcoin crossed $81,000 $547 million $469.19 million shorts; $57.10 million longs
October 6, 2026; CoinGlass figures reported by The Block Bitcoin briefly dipped to around $83,800 $555.6 million $487.2 million longs; short total not stated in the report summary

These totals should not be treated as directly comparable measures of market-wide activity: they refer to separate dates and price moves, and the reporting warns that publicly available data can miss liquidations. The figures are reported estimates, not a complete audited count across every venue.

Did rising oil prices cause the $547 million event?

The available reporting does not establish that oil caused the September 18 liquidation total. The $547 million story connects the liquidations to Bitcoin crossing $81,000, while a separate October report discusses oil-related macro pressure during a Bitcoin decline. The two accounts should not be combined into a single oil-driven event.

Oil-linked contracts have appeared in a different crypto-venue liquidation episode: a CoinDesk report on April 2, 2026 said tokenized Brent oil futures on Hyperliquid were involved after geopolitical news pushed crude prices higher. That shows oil-linked instruments can be part of liquidation reports on crypto venues; it does not demonstrate that oil caused the September $547 million figure. CoinDesk’s report concerns that separate episode.

What a liquidation total tells you—and what it does not

A liquidation is a forced closure of a leveraged position when losses or insufficient margin leave it below an exchange’s requirements. Forced closures can add buying or selling pressure and amplify an existing move. But an aggregate dollar total does not, on its own, identify the original catalyst, show the full size of activity across all venues, or prove that one asset or macroeconomic event caused the liquidations.

For broader context, CoinGlass reported that June 2026 had the first half of the year’s highest monthly liquidation total, US$16.14 billion, with long liquidations making up 69.5%. That half-year context is distinct from either 24-hour event and does not explain their causes. CoinGlass’s 2026 first-half report gives the monthly figures.

How to read liquidation headlines carefully

  • Check the date and whether the figure covers 24 hours or another period.
  • Look at whether longs or shorts were liquidated; a rally and a decline can affect the two sides differently.
  • Separate reported data from proven causation: a liquidation total is not evidence by itself that oil, Bitcoin, or another factor triggered the move.
  • Note the source and its coverage limits. The Block warns that public liquidation data may understate the actual total.
