To make gaming lights react to audio without overwhelming the screen, choose an audio-level effect if you want lights to follow sound volume, then adjust the effect’s intensity and brightness independently where those controls are available. There is no universal sensitivity slider or recommended numeric setting across Hue Sync, Razer Chroma, consoles, and other RGB software.
Choose how the lights should respond
Audio-level effects respond to sound amplitude: louder audio produces a stronger lighting response. By contrast, screen-responsive or game-integrated effects follow visual content or game events. Choose based on what you want the lights to represent, rather than treating these modes as interchangeable.
For lights that follow sound
Razer’s Philips Hue integration includes an “Audio meter” effect. The Philips Hue Module Master Guide says the devices light up according to audio level, using a default color spectrum. Use this type of effect when you want the lighting to pulse or shift with the sound itself.
For lights that follow gameplay or the screen
Hue Sync can capture computer content and translate it into lighting effects. Screen-based or game-integrated modes are a better fit when you want lights to reflect what is happening visually, rather than simply become brighter with louder audio. The available behavior depends on the app, integration, game, and supported devices.

Pick the sync path that matches your game source
Hue’s desktop app is its documented sync route for Windows and Mac computers. For a console or another HDMI-connected source, Hue describes a separate HDMI sync path. Check the current Hue Sync compatibility guide for supported products and formats before choosing hardware.
| Option | Best suited to | Setup considerations | Available tuning axis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hue Sync desktop app | PC or Mac games and other computer content | Hue color-capable lights, a Hue Bridge, and an Entertainment Area configured in the Hue app | Immersion or intensity modes and brightness |
| Hue HDMI sync path | Consoles and other HDMI-connected sources | Choose a compatible HDMI sync product for the source and display; check current compatibility | Product-specific controls |
| Razer Chroma Audio meter | Audio-level-responsive lighting on supported Chroma and Hue devices | Compatible Chroma software and devices, plus the relevant Hue integration | Audio-level effect and available color or brightness controls |
| Game-integrated or screen-responsive effects | Lighting mapped to visual content or game events | Requires the relevant integration and support for the game and device | Event mapping, effect intensity, and brightness where available |
Hue’s desktop workflow requires color-capable Hue lights, a Bridge, and an Entertainment Area. Hue recommends using multiple lights, including Play light bars, for a more immersive arrangement; Play light bars are optional if you already have compatible lights. See Hue’s Sync app overview and Hue’s gaming setup page for its setup and product guidance.

Adjust response strength without overpowering gameplay
“Sensitivity” is often used informally to mean how strongly or noticeably the lights respond. The official Hue materials describe immersion or intensity modes and brightness adjustment, not a universal numeric audio-sensitivity value. Hue says users can choose modes from normal to intense and adjust brightness to control the light effect’s intensity.
- Choose the response mode. Select an audio-level effect for sound-driven lighting, or a screen-responsive or game-integrated mode for visual or event-driven lighting.
- Begin with restrained intensity. If the app offers immersion or intensity modes, start at the less intense end. Raise it gradually until the effect is visible without competing with gameplay. This is a practical tuning approach, not a manufacturer-prescribed setting.
- Set brightness separately. Lower brightness if the room lighting distracts from the display, even if the effect timing or intensity feels right. Conversely, a subtle effect may need more brightness to remain visible in a bright room.
- Judge the result from your normal play position. Room brightness, light placement, and sound output all affect how strong the response feels. Tune while using the game and audio setup you actually play with.
Troubleshoot weak, excessive, or inconsistent reactions
If lights barely react to sound
- Confirm that an audio-level effect, rather than a screen-based or event-driven mode, is selected.
- Check that the intended audio source or application is being captured by the sync software.
- Review device and software compatibility before assuming a separate sensitivity slider exists.
Hue release notes document past desktop-app support for microphone capture and selecting audio devices, but they do not establish that every current setup has the same controls. Check the Hue Sync release notes alongside the current app interface.

If the effect is too bright or distracting
- Reduce brightness independently of the response mode where the app allows it.
- Choose a less intense immersion or effect setting if one is available.
- Reassess the result in the actual room and at your usual viewing position; nearby or brighter lights can feel more intrusive.
If the controls do not match instructions you find
Control names and availability are product- and version-specific. Hue Sync, Razer Synapse, console sync hardware, and third-party RGB apps do not necessarily expose identical settings. Use the current compatibility and product documentation for the software and hardware you have, rather than expecting a shared sensitivity control.
