DaVinci Resolve is the better fit if you need Windows or Linux support, want a free starting point, or prefer editing, color, visual effects and audio tools in one application. Final Cut Pro is better suited to Mac and iPad users who want Apple’s editing workflow and device-specific features. Neither is a universal winner: your platform, workflow, feature needs and preferred payment model matter more than an unverified claim that one editor is always faster or better.

How to compare the cost fairly
The listed prices use different licensing models, so a monthly subscription should not be compared directly with a one-time purchase without considering how long you expect to use the software and what else you need. The prices below are the USD figures displayed on vendor pages accessed October 7, 2026, not a guarantee of current pricing.
- Resolve: Free; Resolve Studio is listed at $295.
- Final Cut Pro for Mac: $299.99 as a one-time purchase.
- Apple Creator Studio: $12.99 per month or $129 per year after a 30-day trial; the bundle includes other creative apps, and some premium content is subscription-only.
- Student and educator subscription: Apple lists $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year.
Creator Studio’s bundle and subscription-only content may matter if you plan to use those extras; if you only want Final Cut Pro for Mac, compare the one-time purchase with your expected period of use. Is one faster or better for video quality?
The official product pages do not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark demonstrating that either editor is universally faster or produces better results. Performance depends on the computer, footage, project complexity, settings and export format, so a general speed claim would go beyond the available evidence.
Before committing, try representative footage and deliverables on the machine you expect to use. Check how each option handles your camera codecs, project complexity, export formats, collaboration and handoff requirements. This is more useful than relying on a speed claim that does not match your setup.
Final recommendation
Start with Resolve if platform flexibility, a free entry point or an integrated post-production environment is your priority. Start with Final Cut Pro if you are committed to compatible Mac or iPad hardware and want Apple’s documented editing and mobile workflow. If both appear suitable, compare the features you will actually use, total cost over your intended ownership period and performance with your own footage.
