The documented way to play it on a PC is through shadPS4, an early PlayStation 4 emulator. The project says Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box, but that does not guarantee every controller, computer, or emulator build will behave the same way. Start by checking that your computer recognizes the controller, then verify shadPS4’s device and bindings; add Steam Input or another remapper only if needed.
What controller setup on PC involves
Bloodborne gameplay on PC in this guide means running the PS4 version through shadPS4, not using a native PC release. The shadPS4 project describes the emulator as early in development and cautions users not to expect a flawless experience. Controller behavior and compatibility can change between builds; consult the project’s current documentation for the latest status.
Keep the input path as simple as possible while setting it up: controller to computer, computer to emulator. Steam Input or an external remapper can add a translation layer, so introduce those only when necessary. This is a practical diagnostic order, not a tested fix for every setup.
Set up a controller in shadPS4
- Connect the controller and check the computer. Plug it in over USB or pair it through the operating system. Make sure it is charged and that the host recognizes it before changing emulator settings.
- Open shadPS4’s controller settings. Select the intended device and check its bindings. The project documents Xbox and DualShock controller support; it also allows keyboard and mouse inputs to be customized and saves custom bindings per game.
- Test input before adding another layer. Try the controller with the current emulator configuration. If you use keyboard and mouse instead, customize the inputs in the controller settings and check the game-specific bindings.
- Configure Steam Input only if you need it. If you launch the emulator through Steam, inspect Steam Input for that entry and configure it deliberately. Valve notes that an external remapper such as DS4Window or InputMapper can cause Steam Input to interface with an emulated Xbox 360 controller rather than directly with the PlayStation controller. Avoid running multiple remappers without a specific reason.
Wired USB or Bluetooth?
| Setup | What to check | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | Try a different USB port. If the controller is connected through a hub, test it directly; you can also rearrange other connected USB devices. | Valve’s USB guidance says port choice and device arrangement can affect USB behavior. It is general troubleshooting, not a Bloodborne-specific fix. Steam USB troubleshooting |
| Bluetooth | First verify that the operating system sees the paired controller and registers its input. Then check shadPS4’s device selection and any Steam Input or remapping configuration. If available, compare with a wired connection. | The cited project and Steam documentation do not identify one Bloodborne-specific Bluetooth fault or a universal cause of detection failures. Troubleshoot common controller symptoms
| Symptom | Checks to make | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Controller does not appear | Confirm the operating system recognizes it. Then check the selected device and bindings in shadPS4. If you use Steam Input or a remapper, inspect that layer separately. | “Works out of the box” is the project’s general statement about Xbox and DualShock support, not a guarantee for every controller revision, host, or build. shadPS4 project documentation |
| Buttons trigger the wrong action or inputs seem duplicated | Review custom bindings and identify which layer is translating the controller: shadPS4, Steam Input, or an external remapper. Change or disable one translation layer at a time. | Valve documents Steam Input’s interaction with an emulated Xbox 360 controller when an external PlayStation remapper is active. The precise symptoms depend on the setup. Steam controller setup guidance |
| Wired controller disconnects or behaves intermittently | Test another USB port. Try the controller without a hub, or change how other USB devices are connected. | These are general USB checks from Steam, not a Bloodborne-specific remedy. Steam USB troubleshooting |
| Bluetooth controller pairs, but the game does not respond | Check host-level input, shadPS4’s selected device and bindings, then Steam Input or any remapper. If possible, test a wired connection to help isolate the connection path. | This is a diagnostic workflow; the cited sources do not establish a single Bloodborne-specific Bluetooth cause. Steam controller setup guidance |
| Controller works in menus but not reliably during play | Check the emulator build and the project’s current compatibility information. Then test with a simpler input path, such as the controller connected directly without an extra remapper. | Controller settings cannot guarantee reliable gameplay if the wider emulation experience is affected by shadPS4’s early-development status. shadPS4 quick start |
When to change settings—and when not to
- If the operating system does not recognize the controller, resolve that connection or pairing issue before changing game bindings.
- If the computer sees the controller but shadPS4 does not, check the emulator’s selected device and controller settings.
- If the controller works in shadPS4 until Steam Input or an external remapper is enabled, isolate those layers rather than changing several settings at once.
- If input is detected but gameplay remains unreliable, check current emulator compatibility information; buying another controller is not established as a necessary fix.
The shadPS4 project documents Xbox and DualShock support, but the available information does not establish a tested ranking between controller models, wired and Bluetooth connections, or direct input and Steam Input. Treat those as configuration choices to diagnose on your own host, not as guaranteed performance differences.
