Both Hall effect and TMR controller sticks use contactless magnetic sensing, avoiding the rubbing electrical contacts used by traditional potentiometer sticks. That can remove one source of wear-related drift, but neither technology makes a complete stick assembly immune to drift or failure. Choose based on the controller’s measured behavior, feel, compatibility, and features—not the sensor label alone.
How do Hall effect and TMR sticks sense movement?
Both technologies use magnets and contactless sensing, but they detect different properties. Hall effect sensors respond to changes in a magnetic field. Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors detect changes in electrical resistance associated with a magnetic field. In a joystick, the sensor converts stick movement into an electrical signal that the controller interprets as an input.
By contrast, a potentiometer senses movement through an electrical contact that slides across a resistive surface. Avoiding that rubbing contact can eliminate that particular wear mechanism; it does not eliminate wear or faults elsewhere in the stick.
Does either technology prevent stick drift?
No. Contactless sensing can reduce drift linked to worn potentiometer contacts, but the stick is a mechanical and electronic assembly. Springs, gimbals, calibration, firmware, and other design choices can affect centering and performance. A Hall effect or TMR label is therefore not a guarantee that a controller will never drift or fail.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These technologies also do not establish how easy a controller is to repair. Replacement modules are model-specific; do not assume a part marketed for one magnetic stick fits another controller.
Is TMR more accurate or power-efficient than Hall effect?
Those advantages are not established as universal results. GameSir promotes low-power and zero-dead-zone claims for its TMR technology, and ASUS says the TMR sticks in its ROG Raikiri II are more accurate and power-efficient than Hall effect. These are manufacturer claims, not independent, controlled comparisons across otherwise identical controllers.

In a review of the GameSir Cyclone 2, TechRadar described its TMR sticks as smooth and precise, while noting that the difference from Hall effect was not large. That is a reviewer’s impression of a particular product, not proof that all TMR sticks outperform all Hall effect sticks. No independently sourced comparative figures for accuracy, battery life, drift rates, or lifespan are established here.
What real controller examples are available?

How should you choose a controller?
Start with the whole controller rather than treating its sensing method as a quality score. Compare the factors that determine whether it will work and feel right for your setup:
- Platform compatibility: Check the exact console, PC, or other device support for the model and region you intend to use.
- Connection: Confirm whether it supports the wired or wireless operation you need; wireless features and battery behavior are separate from stick sensor type.
- Stick feel: Look for hands-on impressions of tension, range, and centering. A sensor technology name does not describe the mechanical feel.
- Adjustment and calibration: Check what the controller or its software lets you configure, and whether independent testing reports consistent centering and input behavior.
- Other controls: Compare triggers, buttons, layout, and any other features important to the games you play.
- Warranty and price: Evaluate the complete product and its support, rather than paying extra solely for a claimed sensor advantage.
If two otherwise suitable controllers are close, prefer the one with better evidence about calibration and measured behavior, a feel you prefer, and confirmed compatibility. In the absence of a comparable independent test, do not treat TMR’s marketed precision or efficiency advantages as a decisive guarantee.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Bottom line
Hall effect and TMR both replace potentiometer contact sensing with contactless magnetic sensing, which can reduce one cause of wear-related drift. The evidence here does not show that one technology is always more accurate, durable, or efficient. Choose by comparing complete controller models, and treat performance claims as product-specific unless independent testing directly supports them.
