PC and console games both go through platform checks, but the release work is not identical. On Steam, a publisher prepares and submits the store page and game build for review, then triggers release when ready. Console releases add requirements tied to each platform’s developer program, configuration, packages and certification or review. The exact process varies by storefront and console.
What differs between a PC and console release?
The key difference is not that PC releases skip review. Steam reviews both the store presence and the game build before release. Console publishers also face platform-specific review and compliance work; Xbox, for example, calls for certified packages for each supported platform and tests final submissions on retail hardware.
| Release task | PC example: Steam | Console examples: Nintendo and Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Release setup | The publisher prepares the store page and build in Steamworks, then initiates release after approval. Steamworks release process | Developers register with the platform and configure the title through its publishing process; Xbox publishing uses Partner Center. Nintendo developer process Xbox publishing overview |
| Review and compliance | Steam reviews the store presence and the game build. Steamworks release process | Nintendo requires review before publication. Xbox applies certification requirements and package certification. Nintendo developer process Xbox publishing checklist Xbox certification requirements |
| Build delivery | SteamPipe delivers builds and provides branches, rollback and delta updates. SteamPipe documentation | Xbox requires certified packages for each supported platform. Nintendo’s public process describes post-release tools for updates and downloadable content. Xbox publishing checklist Nintendo developer process |
These are examples, not a universal PC-versus-console checklist. Other PC storefronts and console platforms have their own processes, and some console publishing details are available only to enrolled developers.
How does a Steam PC release work?
Steamworks separates the work into store-presence and game-build checklists. The publisher marks each component ready for review, addresses any requested changes, and waits for approval of both before releasing. When everything is approved and the title is ready to go live, the publisher uses the “Release App” controls.

Steam says store-presence review typically takes 3–5 business days and recommends submitting at least 7 days before the intended live date to allow time for possible changes. These are Valve’s Steam-specific estimates, not a general PC release timeline. A Coming Soon page must also have been live for at least two weeks before release. Valve’s Steamworks release guidance
What SteamPipe changes after launch
SteamPipe is Steam’s content delivery system. Developers can use public or private beta branches to test builds, roll back to an earlier build, inspect update sizes and deliver changed content rather than requiring every player to download the entire game again. These tools support iteration, but developers still need to upload and validate each build. SteamPipe documentation

What does a console release add?
Console publishing involves platform-specific developer access and preparation. The public Nintendo process describes registering, preparing for development, signing a publishing agreement as the game nears completion, obtaining an age rating, submitting the game for review and providing promotional materials for the eShop and online catalogs. Nintendo says its review is intended to ensure that a game can be played safely and conforms to its production standards. Nintendo developer process
Xbox’s public checklist covers store configuration, ratings, pricing, capabilities and platform services, as well as package readiness. Publishers confirm that a certified package exists for every supported platform. If certification fails, they review the report, fix the issues, rebuild and test the package, then submit it again. Xbox certification requirements include policy, technical and product-component rules. Microsoft says final submissions are tested on retail hardware. Its public overview explains that developers register for the program and use Partner Center to create, configure and publish products; detailed resources and requirements may depend on developer enrollment. Why might the console version come out later?
A console launch may depend on completing that platform’s configuration, package preparation, review and certification work, alongside the game’s own development and testing. Those dependencies can differ from the Steam release path, but they do not establish why any particular game launched later on console. The cause and timing of a staggered release are project-specific; a reliable explanation for a named game requires a statement from its developer or publisher.

Do PC and console updates work differently?
Both PC storefronts and console platforms have ways to support updates, but their tools and procedures differ. SteamPipe documents branches, rollback and delta delivery. Nintendo describes post-release tools for updates, fixes and downloadable content, as well as price promotions. The exact update process depends on the platform. How long does release approval take?
Valve publishes Steam store-presence guidance of typically 3–5 business days for review and recommends submitting at least 7 days before the intended live date. The official Nintendo and Xbox materials cited here describe release steps and readiness requirements but do not establish a comparable universal console certification duration. There is no reliable single number for how much longer a console release takes than a PC release.
