Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a Steam game will not open, closes immediately, or stays marked as running, start with a Windows restart, update Windows and your hardware drivers, verify the affected game’s files, and check that your PC meets the game’s requirements. Then use the exact error message to choose the next step. These checks rule out common causes, but they cannot diagnose every hardware and software configuration; Steam recommends contacting the game’s developer when general troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.
Start with low-risk checks
Make a note of what happens: whether the game never opens, closes after “Preparing to Launch,” remains marked as running, or displays a specific message. The wording matters because messages such as “Missing Executable” and “app already running” point to different causes.
- Restart Windows and Steam. Open Steam again after Windows restarts and test the game before changing other settings. Steam recommends a fresh restart as an early troubleshooting step. See Steam’s general launch troubleshooting.
- Install available Windows and hardware-driver updates. Check Windows Update and the device or component manufacturer’s current driver guidance, particularly for graphics drivers if they have not been updated recently.
- Verify the affected game’s files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game (or select its gear menu), choose Properties, open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. The process may take several minutes. Verify one game at a time, and avoid doing it during other system-intensive work. Steam notes that a report of files failing verification can be normal when the files are local configuration files; that message alone does not prove verification failed. See Steam’s file verification instructions.
- Compare the PC with the game’s requirements. On the game’s Steam Store page, check the supported operating systems and hardware requirements.
- Test for background-software conflicts only if needed. Steam says non-essential software can interfere with games. Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions start Windows with essential drivers and startup programs. If the game works in a clean boot, investigate which disabled app or service is involved, then return Windows to normal startup. If it still fails, the test does not point to interference from another app or service. Follow Microsoft’s steps carefully.
Retest after each change. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to identify what fixed the problem and avoids unnecessary system changes.
Choose the fix for the exact error
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
Steam says this can mean a game file is missing or has been blocked. Check your antivirus or security software’s history and quarantine for the affected file. Do not blindly disable protection or whitelist it: Steam advises taking malware detections seriously and contacting the antivirus provider if you are unsure. If you have established that the file is safe, follow the provider’s instructions for an exception, then verify the game files. If the message persists, submit a Steam Support ticket with an uncropped screenshot of the error and the system report Steam requests.

“Failed to start game (app already running)”
The game may have crashed silently and left a process running, or it may be open under another Windows account. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, find the game process, and end it. If it will not close, restart the computer; then test again once the process is gone. If you participate in the Steam client beta, try both the beta and normal client versions. For a persistent game-specific crash or launch failure, use the game’s support link in your Steam Library. See Steam’s guidance for this error.
“This game is currently unavailable”
Exit and restart Steam, update drivers, and verify the game’s files. Steam also advises checking whether files in the Steam folder are marked read-only. For a non-Valve game, you can try launching its executable from the installation folder. Some games need secondary installers to set up required components; if an installer was canceled or blocked, the game may not launch correctly. If these checks do not help, follow Steam’s network troubleshooting guidance instead of assuming the game files are the only cause.

“Game is not available on your current platform”
Check the game’s Steam Store page for its supported operating systems and hardware. If the game does not support your current operating system, verifying files will not add compatibility. Steam directs store purchasers to its refund process when a game is unsupported; if you redeemed a third-party key, ask the retailer about its refund options. See Steam’s platform-availability guidance.

Escalate based on what the problem indicates. For a missing executable or security alert, consult the antivirus provider if the detection is unclear. For a persistent failure in one game, contact that game’s developer or support team through Steam. If Steam Support requests a system report, include it along with an uncropped error screenshot. Describe the exact message and the steps already tried so support can distinguish a game-specific problem from a wider client or system issue.
