To make room for a large PC game, first find which drive is full. Then move a game to another drive, uninstall one you do not need installed, or clear eligible temporary files with Windows Storage Sense. Use the game launcher’s controls rather than deleting folders at random, and check how saves are stored before removing anything.
Find out which drive needs space
In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage to see how the system drive is being used. For other drives, use Storage settings’ advanced options for storage on other drives. If you use Steam, open Steam > Settings > Storage to see its library drives and the games installed in each library.
Look for games you no longer play, games you can download again later, or games you can move to a drive with enough room. A game’s installed size can vary with updates, optional content, and language packs, so check the actual installation rather than relying on a general estimate. A full C: drive may also be caused by Windows or personal files even when your games are on another drive.
Choose the right way to free space

Move a Steam game to another drive

- Connect or select the destination drive and make sure it has enough free space for the game.
- In Steam, open Settings > Storage. Create or select a library location on the destination drive.
- Select the game in Steam’s Storage view and choose the move control, then select the destination library.
- After the move finishes, launch the game to check that it works.
If the game does not work as expected, Steam’s file verification procedure can check its installed files and may repair them. Verification is for troubleshooting, not for freeing storage.
An external SSD can be another library location if your PC has a compatible port and the drive has enough capacity. Check your computer’s connections and intended setup; there is no single interface or drive recommendation that applies to every PC. Moving a game changes where it is stored, not how much space its installation occupies.

Uninstall a game you do not need installed
Use the game’s launcher or Windows app-removal controls to uninstall it, then check the free space on the drive that held the installation. Avoid deleting a game folder manually unless the publisher or launcher specifically directs you to do so: the launcher may otherwise retain an inconsistent record of the installation.
Steam’s Uninstall Steam instructions warn that removing Steam also removes installed game content. That is different from uninstalling one game. If you are removing the Steam client but want to preserve game files for later, Steam advises moving the steamapps folder elsewhere first; for an individual game, use that game’s uninstall control.

Use Windows Storage Sense for eligible files
Storage Sense can remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Open Settings > System > Storage, review the Storage Sense settings and file selections, and check the schedule before enabling automatic cleanup. Microsoft says the default settings do not clean Downloads or OneDrive, but those settings can be changed, so inspect the selections rather than assuming personal folders are excluded.
Microsoft describes Storage Sense as operating on the system drive. For storage on other drives, use the relevant Windows storage controls instead of assuming Storage Sense will clean them. See Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense and Free up drive space in Windows guidance.

Protect saves before removing or changing installations
A saved game is not necessarily stored in the game’s installation folder. Steam notes that some third-party games do not use Steam Cloud and may store saves in DocumentsMy Games or another location specified by the publisher. Back up important local saves before removing a launcher or manually changing game folders, and check the game publisher’s guidance if you are unsure where its saves live.
