To set up a standard screenless Amazon Echo, plug it in, then use the Alexa app to add the device and connect it to your home Wi-Fi. If the Echo is already set up and you need to change networks or enter a new password, update its saved Wi-Fi connection in the app instead of starting over.
What you need before setup
- An Echo speaker and its power adapter
- A phone with the Alexa app installed and updated
- An Amazon account
- Your home Wi-Fi network name and password
Amazon recommends downloading or updating the Alexa app before you begin. Its standard setup instructions cover Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with clock, Echo Dot Kids, and Echo Pop. Amazon’s Echo setup guide
Set up a new screenless Echo
- Plug the Echo into a power outlet and wait for it to start.
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Select Add Device, then Amazon Echo.
- Choose the option for your Echo family and follow the prompts to register and configure the speaker.
- When prompted, select your home Wi-Fi network, enter its password, and finish the app’s setup steps.
Screen names and prompts can differ by model and app version. Follow the instructions shown for your device.
Change Wi-Fi on an Echo that is already set up
- In the Alexa app, select Devices and choose your Echo.
- Open Device Settings, then select Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.
- Choose a previously connected network, or select Join another Wi-Fi Network and follow the prompts.
This is the route to use after changing your router, Wi-Fi name, or password. Amazon documents support for common home Wi-Fi on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with 802.11a/b/g/n. Echo devices cannot join ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) networks. Amazon’s Wi-Fi settings instructions

Set up an Echo Spot (2024 release)
The Echo Spot has a screen and a different guided setup route. After plugging it in, scan the QR code displayed on the device to open setup in the Alexa app. If you prefer, start manually by selecting Add in the app, then follow the prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and install the latest software update. You’ll need a mobile device, an Amazon account, and your Wi-Fi name and password. Amazon’s Echo Spot setup instructions
Troubleshoot an Echo that will not connect to Wi-Fi
Try these checks before resetting the speaker:
- Restart the Echo. If it lost internet access and did not reconnect, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps
- Check the router and internet connection. Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If that device also cannot connect, restart the router. If it can connect, check that you entered the correct Wi-Fi password for the Echo.
- Move the Echo closer to the router. Amazon recommends keeping it within 30 feet (10 meters) and away from possible interference, including microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics.
- Check network load. Temporarily disconnect some devices to see whether the Echo can join when fewer devices are using the network.
- Try the other Wi-Fi band if available. If your router broadcasts separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, try connecting the Echo to the other network. This is a diagnostic option, not a requirement to use one band.
- Update the saved network if credentials changed. Use the Wi-Fi change steps above to replace the old network or password.
- Check the app and service. Confirm the Alexa app is current and that your internet connection is working. If several devices are having connection problems, the network or provider may be at fault; wait and retry during a possible outage or contact your internet provider.
If these steps do not work, Amazon lists resetting the device as a later option, including when registration is problematic. The reset procedure varies by model, so use the instructions for your specific Echo rather than guessing at a button combination. Amazon’s Echo setup troubleshooting guide
