Chronicles: Medieval is planned to make diplomacy personal: lords have individual relationships, ambitions and loyalties rather than sharing one faction-wide attitude. Its battles are designed to move from pre-battle deployment to real-time third-person orders and direct fighting, with player combat intended to affect nearby troop morale. These are announced plans for a game still in development, not a description of a finished release.
How diplomacy works: relationships between characters
Raw Power Games describes diplomacy as a network of individual ties within a feudal hierarchy. As senior designer Álvaro puts it, “Diplomacy in Chronicles: Medieval is character-to-character.” A favorable relationship with one noble therefore does not automatically make that noble’s allies or faction peers friendly. A player may also be drawn into conflicts within a faction.
Titles define rank and obligations
Titles are intended to organize social rank and social type. The announced types include feudal nobles and clergy, along with merchants, artisans and mercenary bands. Titles may be tied to settlements or regions, which the developer describes as sources of tax, vassal duties and trade revenue. A title-holder may have a liege, vassals, both, or neither.
Opinion, loyalty and legitimacy
A character’s opinion of another is planned to run from -100 to 100, from absolute hatred to absolute love. Traits and actions influence that relationship value, which can affect whether someone helps or hinders the player in politics and battle.

Formal rank is only part of the announced model. A ruler’s strength also depends on loyal vassals and allies, perceived legitimacy, and standing with vassals. The developer says these factors help indicate vulnerability to internal or external attack. These are the system’s stated design principles; the finished mechanics and balance are not established.
How battles work: planning, command and direct combat
The official FAQ describes three battle layers. General is for setting strategy and deploying troops before the battle. Captain is for moving around the battlefield in third person and issuing real-time orders to nearby units. Combat is for engaging enemies directly. The FAQ says players can switch between Captain and Combat during a battle; it does not say whether General can be accessed once fighting has begun.

These layers are the developer’s stated Early Access plans, not confirmation of the final shipped implementation.
Morale and the effect of personal fighting
The first developer diary sets out a design goal in which deployment, army composition, the battlefield and player decisions all matter. Players are meant to fight alongside their units, and skillful one-on-one combat is intended to influence the morale of nearby troops, with effects potentially spreading through formations. Raw Power Games describes the goal this way: “Skillful 1v1 combat feeds into nearby unit morale, which propagates through nearby formations and may turn the tides of a battle.” It is a stated design intention, not a verified outcome from a finished game.

Auto-resolve for battles you do not want to command
The FAQ also says players can use auto-resolve, aimed at people who prefer activities such as diplomacy or trade over directly fighting every battle. The developer describes its outcomes as plausible and its damage as realistic, while warning that auto-resolve may be less efficient than manual command by an experienced player.
How armies are expected to develop
Raw Power Games says it is working on unit types, recruiting locations, experience and promotion into more capable and resilient units. Its army diary frames the setting against late-medieval changes in military service from around 1300 through the fifteenth century. The developer has not presented this progression as a finalized specification.

In an October 4, 2026 preview, TechRadar reported that developers described household troops, peasantry and mercenaries, as well as culture-specific army trees and possible troop development paths. Those details reflect the preview and developer interview, not a guarantee about the final game. The journalist also reported seeing unit placement, third-person fighting, parries and posture meters in a developer presentation; those are observations of a preview build.

The official FAQ says the game is in active development and that details may change. The diplomacy diary likewise says its scope and values remain subject to development and rebalancing. Raw Power Games’ latest diary points to Early Access in early 2027, while the Steam listing gives a planned 2027 release. Neither timing nor the described mechanics should be read as a final-release guarantee.
