Those are different measures. Available evidence suggests that perceived value, coordination overhead, and computing costs can vary even when agents work on the same task, but it does not establish a universal wage or price gap among AI agents.
What “different pay” can mean
Before comparing agents, decide which number you are trying to explain. A quoted price is not the same thing as a buyer’s willingness to pay, and neither is the same as the cost of producing a verified result.
- Buyer willingness to pay: what a person would pay to delegate a task to an agent.
- Offered compensation: what a platform or manager offers an agent or agent-run workforce.
- Performance-linked payout: a bonus or other incentive earned based on an outcome.
- Operating cost: compute, retries, coordination, and human review needed to deliver a verified result.
A difference in one measure does not prove a difference in another. For example, higher token use raises a potential operating expense; it does not show that an agent was paid more or delivered more value.
Why an agent may seem worth more to a buyer
People can value AI and human agents differently even when given the same stated performance. In a study described by ScienceDirect, participants considered delegating decisions to an AI or a human agent. Both were presented with the same 80% mean success rate, while the fee ranged from $0 to $6. In the loss-condition setup, participants were more willing to delegate to the AI at a higher fee than to the human.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is evidence about willingness to delegate under that study’s conditions—not a comparison of pay between AI agents. Equal stated success rates also do not establish that every other perception was equal. The accessible account does not establish the study’s publication year or provide enough detail to generalize the result to other tasks, buyers, or markets.
Why similar task results can have different operating costs
Team coordination can change after an agent swap
A September 4, 2026 arXiv preprint, “Testing Interchangeability in LLM Agent Teams”, examines role-matched agent swaps in collaborative teams. In its tested settings, the authors report little change in task score but 16–63% more communication per unit of progress after swaps, compared with a placebo roster disruption. In Hanabi, the swapped agent was costlier than an inexperienced one; the authors interpret this as consistent with interference from conventions learned with a former partner.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The authors’ conclusion is bounded: agents were more interchangeable in task outcome than in coordination efficiency, and swap effects grew after longer team histories. This is a preprint about the tested team settings, not evidence of a general wage or market-price difference.
Compute use varies between runs
A Stanford Digital Economy Lab summary reports that repeated runs on the same agentic coding task can consume up to 30 times as many tokens as one another. It also reports that more tokens do not necessarily yield greater accuracy. Token consumption is therefore a cost measure to track—not a proxy for quality or compensation. The summary’s publication date was not established in the available account, so the figure should not be treated as a universal rate for all agents or tasks.

What current evidence does—and does not—show
The available findings concern different questions and cannot be combined into one “pay gap” statistic.
| Evidence | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 80% stated success rate for AI and human agents; participant fees from $0 to $6 (ScienceDirect account) | Willingness to delegate in a particular study setup | Different pay among AI agents or a general market premium |
| 16–63% more communication per unit progress after role-matched swaps (Gao and coauthors, 2026 preprint) | Coordination overhead in tested team settings | A wage difference or a universal cost increase |
| Up to 30× run-to-run token consumption on the same tasks (Stanford Digital Economy Lab summary) | Variation in compute consumption | That the higher-consuming run was better or was paid more |
| 24% of tasks completed autonomously by the strongest tested baseline (TheAgentCompany, 2024 preprint) | Performance on a workplace-task benchmark | Compensation, fairness, or commercial performance in deployed organizations |
The benchmark result is useful context for why verified success matters, but it is not a pay study. More broadly, the evidence summarized here does not prove a universal pay gap between AI agents.

How to test whether a pay difference is real
A useful test separates ability, price, and operating cost instead of treating them as one outcome. The following protocol is a practical synthesis, not a claim that one published experiment used every control.
- Choose the outcome. State whether you are measuring quoted price, accepted pay, buyer willingness to pay, performance bonus, or all-in operating cost. Keep them as separate outcomes if you measure more than one.
- Define the task precisely. Use the same task specification, input data, tool permissions, context budget, deadline, and evaluation rubric. Randomly assign task instances across agents so an unusually easy instance does not favor one configuration.
- Measure ability with pay terms fixed. Compare verified output quality, completion rate, time, token use, retries, coordination, and review burden while compensation terms remain the same.
- Test price effects in a separate randomized arm. Vary the displayed price or pay while holding the task and agent information constant. If the question is buyer perception, compare a condition that hides model identity with one that discloses it.
- Repeat independent runs. Because runs can be stochastic and token use can vary widely, use multiple task instances and independent runs. Report distributions and uncertainty rather than only the best result.
- Verify outputs independently. Score work against a preregistered rubric or executable tests. Where practical, keep evaluators blind to the agent’s identity and price. Include failed work and human review effort so unverified output is not mistaken for a cheap success.
- Report raw and normalized measures. Show pay per task, pay per verified success, quality-adjusted pay, time to completion, and all-in cost per verified success. A lower quote may still lead to higher expected cost if it requires more retries or review.
What to compare when interpreting a gap
Once the test is defined, report the conditions that could explain a difference rather than attributing it to “the agent” alone.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Agent, model, and configuration
- Task difficulty and instance assignment
- Output quality, verified success rate, speed, and reliability
- Compute or token use and number of retries
- Coordination overhead and human verification cost
- Whether identity was disclosed or concealed
- Fixed compensation versus incentive-linked compensation
These factors distinguish a price premium for perceived identity from higher measured performance or a higher cost to deliver the same verified result. A convincing claim about compensation needs direct compensation data; performance benchmarks and compute measurements alone cannot supply it.
