It was launched in September 2026, but that was not the same as its full opening: the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority said it was due to open fully in 2027.
What is the Liverpool Accelerate Laboratory?
Hosted by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and developed through the LSTM-led iiCON programme, the £20 million facility is a high-containment laboratory for infectious-disease research. LSTM describes it as combining artificial intelligence, robotics and human organoid technology to support work toward drugs, vaccines and diagnostics.
The Combined Authority says the laboratory is intended to be available to academic and industry collaborators developing treatments with human organoids. It is a research facility, not a public-facing testing service.
Has construction finished, and when did it open?
The September 2026 announcements describe separate milestones. On 4 September, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority said the facility had launched and was due to open fully in 2027. LSTM announced its official opening on 7 September 2026. Those announcements establish a launch and an official opening, but do not establish that routine operations across the facility had already begun.

The name has also changed: LSTM currently calls it the Liverpool Accelerate Laboratory; earlier announcements referred to the Liverpool Robotic Infection Research Laboratory.
How will robotics and organoids help infection research?
LSTM lists Containment Level 3 facilities, automated liquid-handling systems, integrated robotics, AI and machine learning, human organoid platforms, and high-throughput screening. Together, these capabilities are intended to let researchers run complex biological workflows and screen potential treatments in human-relevant models while working in a high-containment setting.

Organoids are laboratory-grown models that reproduce selected features of human tissues. In this facility, they are intended to support infection research and treatment development. The published announcements describe the laboratory’s capabilities and goals, but do not report measured performance gains or results from its own research.
Professor Giancarlo Biagini, LSTM’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, described it as “the first High Containment Level 3 robotic lab in the UK” and said it was designed to automate complex biological processes and accelerate discovery of treatments for deadly infections.
