A Steam game may fail to launch because its files are missing or damaged, another program or security tool is interfering, the game does not support your operating system, or a previous game process is still stuck. Start with a clean restart, then use the exact error message and the steps below to narrow down the cause. Steam Support notes that launch failures can be difficult to diagnose because computers have different hardware and software configurations.
How to narrow down why a Steam game will not launch
Before changing settings, compare a few details. They help distinguish a game-specific problem from an issue with Steam, Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Read the exact error: “Missing Executable,” “This game is currently unavailable,” “Game is not available on your current platform,” and “app already running” point to different troubleshooting paths.
- Check how many games are affected: If only one game fails, focus first on that game’s files, compatibility, and support information. If several games fail, consider a broader client, operating-system, driver, or software-interference problem.
- Note when the problem began: A recent game update, security alert, or interrupted installation may help explain the failure.
- Check whether Steam still shows the game as running: A process left behind after a crash can prevent a new launch.
Try the general fixes first
Steam’s general launch-failure guidance applies to Windows, Linux, and Mac. Begin after freshly restarting your computer, then work through the checks relevant to your system.
- Restart the computer and Steam. A clean restart can clear a stuck game process or temporary problem.
- Update your operating system and relevant drivers. Out-of-date system software or drivers can prevent a game from starting correctly.
- Close non-essential applications temporarily. Other software may interfere with a game. If closing an application changes the result, investigate that conflict rather than leaving security protections disabled.
- Verify the game files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties, open Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam says this may take several minutes. One or more files may fail verification normally if they are local configuration files that should not be replaced.
- Check the game’s Steam Store page. Confirm that the game supports your operating system and compare your computer with its listed system requirements. A computer near the minimum requirements may still have launch or performance problems.
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This message generally means that a game file is missing or blocked. Steam identifies antivirus quarantine as the most common cause of this specific error.

- Check your security software’s quarantine or detection history for a game file.
- Verify the game’s files using Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- If the error remains, submit a Steam Support ticket with the error screenshot and system information Steam requests.
Do not add a broad, permanent antivirus exclusion just to bypass the message. First identify what your security software flagged and use its documented recovery process only if you trust the file and its source.
“This game is currently unavailable”
Steam’s troubleshooting sequence for this message is to restart Steam, update drivers, and verify the game files. It also lists installation, permissions, and network problems as possible causes, so consider those if the basic steps do not help.

Some games need a secondary installer to complete setup. It may install runtime components such as DirectX, PhysX, or C++ components. If you canceled that installer or another application blocked it, the game may not launch. The installers are in the game’s installation folder; follow the game’s or Steam Support’s instructions for the relevant component rather than downloading runtime files from an untrusted site.
“Failed to start game (app already running)”
This error can mean the game closed improperly after a silent crash or failed to exit cleanly. On Windows, open Task Manager and check whether the game still has a process running. If it does, end the stuck process and try again; if you cannot identify it confidently, restart the computer instead.

If you use the Steam client beta, test whether the problem also happens with the regular client version. If the message persists, contact the game’s support team.
“Game is not available on your current platform”
This message means the game does not support the operating system you are currently using. Check the game’s Steam Store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements before trying other fixes.

Steam launch options can override certain settings and may help recover from incompatible video settings. When to contact support
If the relevant steps do not resolve the problem, contact the game’s developer or the support channel named for the specific error. Include the exact message, your operating system, and any requested screenshot or system information. Steam notes that some configuration-specific problems may require help from a local PC technician.
