If an NFT marketplace closes, its website, listings and display tools may disappear—but that does not by itself erase the token from its blockchain. Whether you can access or transfer the NFT depends on who controls the wallet holding it; whether its image and details remain available depends on where its metadata and media are stored.
What a marketplace closure changes—and what it does not
An NFT involves separate pieces that can be affected differently when a marketplace shuts down: the token recorded on a blockchain, the marketplace’s listing and display, and the metadata and media associated with the token.
| Part | What a closure may affect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Token and owner address | The token and transfers are governed by its blockchain and contract; a marketplace going offline does not, by itself, establish that the token has been erased. | Check the chain, contract address, token ID and holding address in a chain explorer or compatible wallet. Whether you can authorize a transfer also depends on who controls the wallet keys. |
| Marketplace listing and display | Listings, search results, cached images and account pages may become unavailable with the service. | Look for the NFT in a compatible wallet or another service that supports its chain and token standard. Visibility and trading support are not universal. |
| Metadata and media | The name, description, traits and image can remain available, become difficult to retrieve, or disappear separately from the token. | Inspect the token’s tokenURI or equivalent and check both the metadata record and the media it references. |
OpenSea says of items it delists: “The item or collection will still exist on the blockchain (we don’t have the power to change that!) but you won’t be able to see it here.” That statement describes delisting from OpenSea, not every marketplace closure, token contract, chain or custodial service. See OpenSea’s explanation of delisted items and collections.
Will my NFT still be in my wallet?
First determine whether the NFT is held in a self-custody wallet whose keys you control or in an account where a provider controls access. In self-custody, the marketplace is generally a viewing or trading service rather than the holder of your wallet keys. In a custodial account, access and withdrawal depend on that provider’s arrangements; the blockchain record alone does not tell you how to recover account access or export an asset.

- Find the blockchain, contract address, token ID and address that currently holds the token.
- Use the relevant chain explorer or a wallet that supports the chain and token to check the on-chain record.
- If the NFT is in a custodial account, follow that provider’s own closure, withdrawal or export instructions. Do not assume a universal recovery process.
What happens to the NFT’s image and details?
The token’s tokenURI (or equivalent URI) points to metadata, which may include a name, description, traits and a separate media reference. A token can remain on-chain even if a referenced image or metadata file no longer loads.
Hosted website URLs
If the URI points to a conventional web server, availability depends on that server and the organization maintaining it. If the server disappears or stops serving the file, the NFT may still exist while its description or image is unavailable.

IPFS or Arweave
These are decentralized storage options, but a URI using either one is not a guarantee that content will remain available forever. Check whether the referenced metadata and media can actually be retrieved.
Fully on-chain content
When content is stored on-chain, it does not depend on an external media server in the same way. This differs from metadata stored on-chain while the image remains external. OpenSea’s February 2026 documentation distinguishes “fully onchain,” “onchain metadata,” “decentralized” (IPFS or Arweave), “centralized” (traditional web servers) and “unknown” storage labels. OpenSea says these classifications are determined programmatically and may not be entirely accurate, so inspect the underlying URI and referenced content rather than treating a marketplace label as conclusive. See OpenSea’s metadata standards documentation and its explanation of storage types.

Can I view or sell the NFT somewhere else?
Possibly. A different wallet or marketplace may display or support the NFT if it works with the same blockchain and token standard. That does not mean every service will recognize it, show its media correctly or let you list it for sale. Check the receiving service’s support for the specific chain and token before relying on it.
If you control the wallet and want to move the NFT, use a wallet and destination address compatible with the same chain and token. Ledger’s guide describes one Ethereum transfer route from MetaMask to a Ledger account: how to send NFTs on Ethereum. Follow the applicable wallet instructions, verify the destination address and wait for transaction confirmation. This is an Ethereum example, not a universal transfer procedure or a reason everyone needs a hardware wallet. Transfers can involve network fees, and sending to the wrong address or network can put the asset at risk.

What to do if the NFT is missing from a marketplace
- Confirm the token record. Check the holding address, blockchain, contract address and token ID with a chain explorer or compatible wallet.
- Check custody. If the asset is in a self-custody wallet, confirm you can access its keys. If a provider holds it in a custodial account, use that provider’s instructions.
- Inspect the content references. Check the token’s
tokenURIor equivalent, then check the metadata JSON and the media URL it references. Metadata and media can be stored separately. - Try a compatible viewer. If the token is present but missing only from one marketplace’s display, try another viewer that supports its chain and token.
- Refresh marketplace metadata if appropriate. OpenSea says its refresh feature may help after metadata errors are fixed or an item is revealed. Refreshing the marketplace’s index cannot restore a file that is no longer available at its source. See OpenSea’s metadata refresh instructions.
What the available data says about content loss
A 2022 ACM CCS study, “Understanding Security Issues in the NFT Ecosystem,” counted 12,215,650 OpenSea assets in its study dataset and found 3,175,644 with a valid metadata_url field as of June 15, 2021. In observations from June to December 2021, it found that 3.91% of images and 9.04% of metadata records hosted on IPFS in that dataset disappeared. These are historical, study-specific figures—not current probabilities for an individual NFT and not rates of losses caused by marketplace closures. The study also found that most asset and metadata URLs in its dataset were on non-IPFS domains. It does not establish a reliable rate of NFT media loss specifically caused by marketplaces shutting down. See the study’s ACM publication page.
