In Dark Souls: Remastered, make bonfires part of your routine, check a weapon’s stat requirements before building around it, and consider the weight of all your equipped weapons and armor together. When you level up, inspect the stat changes and spend souls toward a specific need rather than following a supposedly universal build.
What bonfires do—and why to use them
Resting at a lit bonfire restores HP, Estus Flask uses, magic uses, and status ailments, and automatically saves your progress. You cannot rest at a bonfire until it is lit. Resting also respawns many defeated enemies, so weigh the recovery against having to face them again on your route.
Bonfires are also character-management points. Depending on your progress, the menu may offer leveling, reversing hollowing, kindling, upgrading or repairing equipment, and attuning magic. The available options can change as you advance, so a service missing at an early bonfire is not necessarily missing from the game.
Humanity and kindling
If you are hollow, the bonfire menu lets you spend humanity to return to human form. You can also offer humanity to kindle a bonfire, increasing the Estus uses available there; the Rite of Kindling permits further kindling. These are separate choices from simply resting, so read the menu before spending humanity.

How to choose what to level
Leveling at a bonfire spends souls to strengthen character stats. There is no single stat priority established for every beginner: a useful level depends on what your character needs and what equipment you intend to use.
- Pick an immediate goal. You might want more survivability, greater stamina or equipment flexibility, or the attributes needed to use a particular weapon or spell.
- Check the character and equipment screens. Review your current stats and the requirements shown for the gear you want. The menu’s on-screen help can explain selected stats.
- Inspect the proposed change before confirming. Compare what the level improves with the requirement or problem you are trying to address. Souls spent on one attribute cannot be spent on another level at that moment.
For a first playthrough, this is more reliable than investing in a stat because a build guide calls it essential without accounting for your chosen weapon or current situation.

Check weapon and armor requirements
Equipment used without its required stats will not perform as intended. If you have chosen a weapon, compare its requirements with your character’s attributes before spending levels to meet them. The same basic principle applies to armor requirements: raising attributes to qualify for selected equipment is a legitimate reason to level, but it is a choice rather than a universal priority.
Manage equipment load as a whole
The combined weight of equipped weapons and armor affects your character’s ability. That means changing one piece can alter the total: when adjusting armor, include your equipped weapons in the decision rather than considering armor alone.

The available Remastered manual information does not establish exact weight percentages or roll-speed breakpoints. Check the game’s status and equipment screens as you change gear, and judge the resulting setup in play instead of relying on an unsupported threshold.

The bonfire menu can provide equipment upgrades using souls and specific items, as well as repairs using souls. Which services are available depends on progress. Explore the options that appear, and read what an upgrade or repair requires before committing souls or items; the available manual information does not specify which route, material, or blacksmith will be available at a particular point.

The original PC manual also covers the first game, but it is a separate edition and should not be treated as a Remastered control guide.
