Your projects are not necessarily deleted when student software access ends—but you may lose the ability to edit, upload, or sign in to them. The software license, the school account used to access it, and files stored in a vendor cloud are separate. Their end dates and rules can differ, so copy important work to a personal account or local storage before school access stops, then open the copies to confirm they work.
What happens to files when a student license expires?
There is no universal retention rule. A software entitlement may end while files remain stored, but the service could restrict editing, new uploads, or other features. Separately, your school may disable the account you use to sign in. That can prevent access even if the software provider has not deleted the files.
Check both the software provider’s current policy and your school’s departure or account-closure notice. Ask the school when sign-in, email, cloud storage, software access, and project services stop; they may not share one deadline.
What the rules look like for major student services
Autodesk Education
Autodesk says an Education plan expires after one year and eligible users can renew annually. If you do not renew, files in Autodesk Drive can still be accessed, but you cannot edit them or upload new files. Autodesk says documents stored in its cloud service remain available for 30 days after Education plan access expires, so retrieve them before that period ends. This 30-day window applies to Autodesk’s stated cloud-service policy, not to other vendors or school accounts. See Autodesk’s guidance on renewing Education access.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

Autodesk also says university graduates are no longer eligible for education access, but can keep an Autodesk Account and preserve data and files. Keeping the account does not mean the Education entitlement continues.
Adobe school accounts
Adobe Student File Transfer can copy assets from a supported, active school-provided account to a personal Adobe account. It copies rather than moves files, so the originals remain in the school account. The tool checks available space in the destination; if there is not enough, you may need to select fewer files. Adobe says personal accounts typically provide 5 GB of storage. Eligibility varies by student and team account, and a supported school identity is required.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

The normal transfer workflow does not include Behance or Portfolio assets; Adobe handles those through separate processes. A copied project may also rely on premium content unavailable on a free personal account. In that case, it may remain viewable but not savable or exportable until you remove the premium content or have a plan with the required entitlement. Review Adobe’s Student File Transfer information and FAQ before starting.
Do not apply Adobe’s individual Creative Cloud cancellation rules to every school account. For individual paid-app subscriptions, Adobe says access ends when the current billing period ends; online storage drops to 5 GB, and an over-quota user has 30 days to reduce usage. That is an individual-subscription policy, not a general rule for institution-managed accounts. See Adobe’s individual plan cancellation guidance.

Microsoft school accounts
Microsoft’s student transition guide recommends moving valued documents, contacts, and capstone projects from a school account to a personal account and describes OneDrive/Mover as a transfer route. It does not set a universal deletion deadline: the school controls its account lifecycle. Follow your institution’s migration directions and ask when your sign-in and OneDrive access end. See Microsoft’s student file-transition guide.
How to protect your work before access ends
- Get the school’s dates. Ask when your school identity is disabled and whether email, cloud drive, software sign-in, and project services have separate end dates.
- Inventory where projects live. Sign in to each service while your school identity still works. Identify files stored locally, in a personal account, or under the institution’s account.
- Export and copy important work. Preserve the original editable format where possible, and create a broadly readable export when useful. Copy the files to a personal destination or local storage before school access ends.
- Check the transfer constraints. For Adobe, confirm Student File Transfer eligibility, available destination storage, premium-content dependencies, and separate Behance or Portfolio processes. For Microsoft, use your school’s migration instructions and confirm the destination is a personal account rather than a link to files that still live only in the school tenant. For Autodesk, note your Education plan’s expiry and retrieve cloud-service documents within Autodesk’s stated 30-day period.
- Test the copies. Open a sample of transferred or downloaded projects from the destination account or device. Check linked media, fonts, templates, plug-ins, datasets, and other assets. Confirm the target software can save or export the project.
- Keep another copy of irreplaceable work. Use reliable storage you already have if possible. A portable external SSD is one option, not a requirement; choose capacity based on your actual project sizes.
How to choose a personal destination
Before transferring, check whether you will be able to sign in after graduation, how much storage is available, and whether your destination supports the native project files and their linked assets. Consider whether paid or premium features will remain editable or exportable, how easily you can make a local copy, and whether the workflow copies or moves files.

Microsoft’s school-to-personal account guidance and Adobe’s Student File Transfer workflow are different routes, and neither guarantees the same result in every school setup. Check the storage available in your school and personal accounts before paying for more. If you use a cloud transfer tool, verify that the copied files open independently of the school account.
