Missing or altered game files, security software, required dependencies, system compatibility, conflicting applications, or a launcher problem can produce similar symptoms. Start by noting where the failure occurs and the exact error, then follow the matching checks below using legitimate game files.
Identify what happens when you launch the game
Before changing files or settings, restart the PC and try launching the game once. Steam notes that launch failures can have many causes across different hardware and software configurations, so begin with the symptom rather than an assumption about DRM. See Steam’s general launch troubleshooting.
- A launcher opens, then the game does not: record the launcher’s message and whether the game process appears briefly.
- The operating system reports a missing executable: check the installation and the security product’s quarantine or detection history.
- The platform says the game is unavailable or already running: use the corresponding platform-error branch below.
- The game crashes without a message: note whether it reaches a splash screen, intro video, or menu; game-specific launch cases may need tailored guidance.
- The game works only when started a particular way: record the launch path. Starting an executable from the install folder can help reveal a different error in some Steam cases, but is not a universal fix.
Write down the exact error text, whether it appears in the launcher, operating system, or game, and whether other games launch normally. This helps distinguish a single-game problem from a broader system or platform issue.
Check requirements and system readiness
Compare the PC with the game’s requirements
Check the game’s official system requirements, including supported operating system, processor, graphics hardware, memory, and any stated driver or runtime needs. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that every configuration will launch successfully, but a mismatch is a reason to resolve compatibility before investigating other causes.

Update the operating system and drivers
Install available operating-system updates and graphics or other relevant computer-driver updates through Windows Update or the hardware maker’s supported update method. Steam includes current operating-system and computer drivers among its general Windows troubleshooting steps.
Temporarily close nonessential software
Close nonessential applications and overlays, then test the game again. If this changes the result, re-enable applications one at a time to identify a possible conflict. Treat this as a diagnostic check: Steam recommends disabling nonessential software, but does not identify one particular program as the cause of every launch failure.

Repair or inspect the game installation
If the platform reports a missing executable
Steam identifies antivirus quarantine or detection, corrupted files, and failed downloads as possible causes of a “Missing Executable” error. Check the security product’s quarantine or detection history and verify the game’s installed files through Steam. Restore or allow a file only after confirming it belongs to the legitimate game installation; do not download replacement executables from untrusted sources. If game files were altered
If files were removed or changed after installation, the current installation may be incomplete or inconsistent. For a Steam installation, use the platform’s file-verification option rather than guessing which files should be present. For another storefront, use its official repair or verification instructions if available. Keep a record of any modifications so you can explain the installation state to the game’s support team.

Choose the fix based on the platform error
“This game is currently unavailable”
Steam’s guidance for this message includes restarting Steam, updating drivers, and verifying game files. For a third-party game, trying the game executable in its installation folder may expose a more specific error. That test can help narrow the problem, but does not bypass licensing or guarantee that the game will run independently of its platform. See Steam’s “This game is currently unavailable” steps.
“App already running”
The message can occur when a game process is hung, after a silent crash, or because of installation trouble. Check Task Manager for a remaining process belonging to the game and close it if it is unresponsive; then verify the game files. See Steam’s “app already running” guidance.

A game-specific startup crash
Some failures depend on the title or hardware configuration rather than a general launcher issue. GOG’s launching-issues index lists separate cases involving missing DirectX files, newer Intel CPUs, intro-video crashes, and laptops with dual graphics. Look for instructions specific to your game and symptom instead of applying unrelated fixes.

GOG’s developer quality-assurance guidance defines DRM-free as shipping a game without technical restrictions on how it is installed, copied, or activated. It says single-player aspects should work without Galaxy and when disconnected from the internet, and that required redistributables should be included. Read the GOG Developer Docs quality-assurance requirements for that platform’s expectations.

Those expectations do not establish that any arbitrary altered installation is complete, compatible with your PC, or equivalent to a storefront’s supported build. If a game needs a dependency such as a runtime, use the legitimate installer or the game publisher’s instructions; do not assume a DRM-related change supplies or preserves every required component.
When to contact support
If the game still fails after the relevant checks, contact its developer or publisher for a third-party game crash or bug. Steam directs users to the third-party provider for those issues; Steam Support is the route for Steam-related authentication or CD-key problems. See Steam’s Third-Party Game Support guidance.
Include the game version, operating system, exact error text, where it appears, how you launch the game, and the troubleshooting steps already tried. If the installation was modified, describe that accurately and ask the publisher which supported files or repair method to use.
