What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Install mods only from the game’s official mod channel or a reputable platform’s official project page or app, and check the exact file and its scan status before opening it. Avoid unsolicited downloads and anything that pressures you to act quickly. Keep Windows and antivirus protection updated, and treat any security alert as a reason to stop and investigate—not as something to dismiss because a mod is popular.
Choose a trustworthy source before downloading
Start with the game’s own mod channel if it has one. Otherwise, use the official project page or app of a platform that hosts the mod. There is no single best mod source for every game: check whether the platform hosts the actual file, whether it shows a per-file scan status, and how that file reached you.
A familiar platform name does not make every link or file authentic. Steam warns that malicious downloads can pose as gaming-related tools, including mod managers. Navigate to the platform or project yourself rather than following an unsolicited link. Steam’s account security recommendations explain why to rely on official sources and be wary of suspicious links.
- Confirm the project is for the game you play and that the file matches the mod and version you intended to download.
- Avoid mirrors when an official project page or app is available.
- Be skeptical of direct-message ZIP files, claims that a download is required for early access, and requests to join a server or install immediately. These are among the warning signs described in CurseForge’s May 14, 2026 safety guidance.
Check the file’s status and contents
Where a platform provides per-file scan information, read what the status actually means. On Nexus Mods, a green check means internal checks and a VirusTotal scan passed. Blue means internal checks passed but VirusTotal could not scan the file. White means it has not been scanned; yellow means scanning is in progress; red means it failed checks or received a significant number of VirusTotal positives and needs review. Nexus Mods’ virus-scanning guidance, last updated December 31, 2024, describes these statuses and notes that false positives can occur.

A scan badge is useful evidence, not a guarantee that a file is harmless. If the platform links to a VirusTotal report, review it rather than relying on a badge alone. A file with no completed scan is not equivalent to one that passed checks.
If the platform lets you inspect an archive or imported pack before installation, look for files that do not fit the mod. Stop if you find an unfamiliar JAR, an unexpected executable, or content that appears unrelated. Do not run a suspicious file just to see what it does.

Also distinguish a file downloaded directly from a platform from one sent by someone else and later imported. CurseForge says it scans files downloaded directly through its app or website, but cannot scan or verify modpack files friends send and users import into the app. Importing an external archive does not make it verified. CurseForge’s safety article explains this distinction.
Install using the game’s instructions
Mod formats and installation locations vary by game, so there is no safe universal folder path or install sequence. Follow the installation instructions for the specific game and mod, and use the platform’s app only where its instructions call for it. Do not follow an unrelated guide that asks you to disable protection or run an unexpected program.

- Open the game or mod platform’s official instructions for the specific mod and game version.
- Follow the stated installation or import steps, checking that each requested file and action matches those instructions.
- Stop and verify with the platform or mod author if the instructions require an unfamiliar executable or conflict with the platform’s file details.
Keep Windows and antivirus protection current
Microsoft recommends using trusted download sources, keeping antivirus definitions and Windows, browser, and app updates current, and notes that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into modern Windows versions. See Microsoft’s guidance on protecting a PC from unwanted software. You do not need to turn off baseline protection to install a mod from a trustworthy source.

Do not dismiss an alert just because the mod is popular or came from a known platform. Mod files can sometimes trigger false positives, but the alert still deserves investigation. Check the exact detection and the platform’s scan status; then consult the platform or antivirus provider before deciding what to do. Steam likewise advises taking detections seriously and consulting the antivirus provider before creating an exception. Steam’s antivirus guidance covers this situation.
Rank #4
- Do not turn off antivirus protection or add an exclusion as your first response.
- Check whether the file has a platform scan report and whether the alert matches a specific detection.
- Report a suspected false positive and ask the antivirus provider or platform for guidance.
If you suspect unwanted software has been installed, Microsoft recommends updating security intelligence and running a full Microsoft Defender scan. If the problem persists, Microsoft lists an offline scan as a further step in its PC protection guidance.
CurseForge also provides a detection tool for its June 2023 infected-mods incident. That guidance is specific to that historical incident, not a general current list of dangerous mods; see CurseForge’s incident response article only if that incident is relevant to your situation.
