The key is to let players adjust separate demands—such as repeated inputs, aiming, reaction timing, enemy pressure, and combat information—while preserving the decisions and challenge they want to keep.
Why one difficulty slider is not enough
Combat challenge is made up of several different demands. A player may enjoy choosing a build and reading enemy patterns but struggle with rapid button presses. Another may manage the controls but need more time to recognize visual cues. A single easy, normal, or hard setting can change several demands at once, including ones that are not causing difficulty.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 recommends offering multiple difficulty options alongside ways to configure individual core mechanics. Its example is a player who may want to reduce combat difficulty while leaving puzzle difficulty unchanged—or adjust the reverse. The design principle is to make the barrier adjustable without requiring players to give up the parts of the game they enjoy.
Give players both presets and targeted controls
Broad presets are useful for players who want a quick choice. Independent controls offer more precision when a preset changes too much. These approaches can coexist: presets establish a starting point, and specific settings let players tune the demands that matter to them.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Combat presets
God of War Ragnarök lists five combat challenge levels: Give Me a Story, Give Me Grace, Give Me Balance, Give Me No Mercy, and Give Me God of War. Its accessibility page also describes aim assistance, lock-on camera modes, and audio cues for combat and traversal actions. There is an important limit: Give Me God of War is selectable only when starting a new game, so players should not assume every difficulty option can be changed at any time. PlayStation reports more than 70 accessibility features on the page; that is the publisher’s count, not an independent evaluation.
Separate combat variables
Dragon Age: The Veilguard illustrates a more modular approach. EA documents options for enemy aggression, enemy resistances, combat timing, aim assistance, and parry timing. Those controls address different sources of friction: how opponents behave, how much damage they resist, and how demanding the player’s timing or aiming must be. Players can alter a particular pressure without relying solely on a broad difficulty label.

Reduce input demands
Diablo IV documents button remapping and a toggle for skills that otherwise require a held input. A toggle can change a sustained physical demand without removing the skill’s role in combat. Blizzard’s 2023 launch-era accessibility article reports more than 50 individual features across dexterity, text-reading, and vision needs; this is Blizzard’s published feature count. Its lead accessibility designer, Drew McCrory, put the goal this way: “The only limitation to adventuring in Sanctuary should be interest, not capability.”
Make settings understandable and usable mid-game
A control only helps when players can find it, understand its effect, and change it at a useful time. SpecialEffect’s Developer Kit recommends explaining how difficulty settings change the game, offering specific-context adjustments as well as global presets, and allowing changes during play—including during difficult encounters. It also suggests fine-grained controls such as enemy aggression or damage where they suit the design.

These are design recommendations, not rules that every game must implement identically. Some choices may have consequences for a run, mode, or encounter, but those limits should be stated before a player commits. Clear descriptions should explain the practical result—such as whether an option changes enemy behavior, incoming damage, aim assistance, or a held-button requirement—instead of relying on an ambiguous label.
A 2024 qualitative study by Jesse J. Martinez, Jon E. Froehlich, and James Fogarty interviewed 13 gamers with disabilities about evaluating games. Participants described trouble finding and interpreting accessibility information; one example involved a setting name that did not clearly identify which animation it disabled. The study is not a representative survey, but it illustrates why player-facing explanations and discoverable settings matter. Read the study.

Test with disabled players and keep iterating
Accessibility options should be evaluated with the people they are meant to serve, then improved as teams learn where implementation or presentation falls short. Blizzard says feedback from the disability community shaped accessibility features in Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, including audio navigation and distinct audio pings. That is an example of community input influencing a game’s design, not proof that one feature or feedback process works for every player.
Testing should look beyond whether a setting exists. Can players locate it? Does its description predict what it will do? Does it address the specific barrier without unexpectedly changing another part of combat? Feedback can expose problems that a feature checklist alone will miss.

Use hardware as an optional complement
For players whose barrier involves standard controller inputs, Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller can act as a hub for external switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks. Microsoft lists Xbox consoles and Windows PCs among supported systems, while noting that supported-device functionality varies. External assistive devices are separate from in-game settings: hardware may offer another input path, but it is not appropriate for every player and cannot replace configurable controls within the game.
A practical way to evaluate combat accessibility
When designing or assessing an action RPG, consider these questions for each major combat demand:
- What changes? Distinguish player execution demands, enemy behavior, damage pressure, and access to visual or audio information.
- Can players tune it independently? Keep combat, puzzles, and other challenge dimensions from being unnecessarily tied to one global setting.
- When can it be changed? State whether an option works during a run or encounter, or is restricted by a start condition or mode.
- Is its effect clear? Describe the actual behavior in plain language rather than expecting players to infer it from a label.
- Has it been evaluated with disabled players? Gather feedback on discovery and real use, then iterate rather than treating a feature list as evidence of universal access.
The right balance will vary by player and game. The useful design goal is not to remove meaningful combat decisions; it is to let players reduce the demands that block them from making those decisions.
