If a monitoring app does not show a new NVIDIA GPU, first check whether NVIDIA’s own nvidia-smi utility can see it. If it can, the issue is more likely to involve the third-party app’s version or integration; if it cannot, check driver compatibility and whether the operating system detects the card. This is a useful troubleshooting split, not a diagnosis by itself: the cause depends on the GPU, operating system, driver, and monitoring app.

Why a monitoring app can miss a new GPU

GPU detection happens at more than one layer. NVIDIA’s Management Library (NVML) provides a programmatic interface for monitoring and managing supported NVIDIA GPUs, and NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi utility is built on NVML. Third-party monitoring software may use its own integration or depend on a particular driver interface, so it may not show a GPU that NVIDIA’s utility can list. NVIDIA describes NVML as “a C-based programmatic interface for monitoring and managing various states within Data Center GPUs.” NVIDIA NVML documentation describes the library; its stated scope should not be read as a guarantee about every third-party app or GPU family.

Support can also depend on the specific GPU, driver, operating system, and application version. A new model may not yet be handled by an older monitor, but without those details it is not possible to identify a confirmed compatibility issue. NVIDIA’s deployment documentation treats driver/toolkit compatibility and monitoring interfaces as distinct considerations. NVIDIA deployment documentation

Check whether NVIDIA’s utility sees the GPU

Open a terminal or command prompt and run:

nvidia-smi -L

NVIDIA documents -L (also written --list-gpus) as an option to list GPUs detected through NVML. You can also run nvidia-smi without an option to view its standard status display. NVIDIA System Management Interface documentation

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Interpret the result carefully: NVIDIA notes that the utility’s available functions and output vary across GPU families, and that nvidia-smi output is not guaranteed to remain backwards compatible. A missing metric or feature does not, on its own, prove the GPU is absent.

If the GPU appears in nvidia-smi but not the monitoring app

This result points toward the third-party app’s support or integration as the next thing to check. It does not prove that the app is incompatible: confirm its release notes or supported-device information for the exact GPU and check which driver or interface its current version uses.

  • Record the monitoring app’s name and version, along with the installed NVIDIA driver version.
  • Check the app’s official release notes or support information for the GPU model and relevant driver support.
  • Compare what the app reports with what nvidia-smi lists. A missing sensor or feature is different from the device being entirely undetected.

NVIDIA recommends NVML and its Python bindings for tools intended to work across driver releases, while warning that nvidia-smi output itself is not guaranteed to be backwards compatible. That distinction is a reason to check how a monitor integrates with NVIDIA’s software, not evidence that any particular named app has a known problem.

Check system-level visibility before assuming the monitoring app is at fault. The relevant next steps depend on the computer and GPU; the title alone cannot establish a hardware fault or justify a specific repair.

  1. Confirm the exact GPU and operating system. Use the full model name and the OS edition and version when checking compatibility.
  2. Verify the NVIDIA driver supports that GPU and OS. Treat an update as a compatibility check, not a guaranteed fix. Confirm the appropriate driver through NVIDIA’s deployment documentation before following version-specific advice.
  3. Check whether the operating system detects the device. If it does not, investigate installation, connection, and device-visibility issues for that system before focusing on the monitoring software.
  4. Use the exact command output and error message to narrow the next step. A missing GPU listing differs from an error launching the utility or a listing that lacks a particular metric.

Details needed to identify a specific compatibility problem

To determine whether a particular combination is supported, collect the full GPU model, operating system edition and version, NVIDIA driver version, monitoring application name and version, and the exact output or error. Without those identifiers, no specific app incompatibility or model-specific fix can be established.
