An air-fryer toaster oven can bridge the gap, but its “air fry” label alone does not guarantee basket-style crisping.
How do an air fryer and a toaster oven cook?
Both use heat. An air fryer circulates hot air around food, helping remove surface moisture so food can crisp without being immersed in oil. A toaster oven heats a larger chamber and can handle a broader range of cooking tasks; some models also use a fan and air-fry basket to improve airflow around food.
The distinction is practical as much as technical: a basket-style air fryer concentrates on cooking food in a compact basket, while a toaster oven is built to work with a wider variety of foods and cookware. As RTINGS puts it, “Despite their advertised features, the two products are fundamentally different in design, which makes them suitable for different purposes.” RTINGS’ comparison focuses on tested appliances, not every model on the market.
Which appliance crisps food faster?
In RTINGS’ tested sample, basket-style air fryers reached a 45% moisture-loss target in a median of 17 minutes 7 seconds, compared with 20 minutes 53 seconds for air-fryer toaster ovens. The same comparison reported median crispy-fries scores of 68.7% for basket-style air fryers and 65.6% for air-fryer toaster ovens. These are sample-specific test results; they do not predict the performance of every appliance or every recipe.

That makes a basket-style air fryer a sensible choice for frequent small batches of fries, frozen foods, vegetables, or proteins when crisping is the priority. Hybrid toaster ovens vary: the air-fry setting, fan placement, airflow, and whether the appliance includes a mesh basket can all affect the result. Check independent testing of the specific model rather than relying on the feature name.
Which has more useful capacity?
A basket-style air fryer’s compact chamber suits smaller batches, but its shape may limit the size or shape of the food you can fit. A toaster oven often accommodates a tray or pan and can be more practical for larger or irregularly shaped foods. Neither category has one standard usable capacity, so check the interior dimensions and the space available for your typical meal.

For example, GE says one of its large-capacity air-fry toaster ovens can toast six bagel halves, roast an 8 lb. chicken, or bake a 12-inch pizza. Those are manufacturer claims for a listed model, not independent capacity measurements; they should not be applied to toaster ovens generally. GE’s air-fry toaster oven information is a starting point for checking that model’s specifications.
What can each appliance do besides air-fry?
Basket-style air fryer
Basket models are primarily designed for air-frying, though some add other cooking modes. If you already have a toaster or oven and want a dedicated appliance for crisping smaller portions, the focused design may be an advantage.

Toaster oven
Depending on the model, a toaster oven can toast, bake, broil, roast, and perform other countertop cooking tasks. It may be the more useful choice if you want one appliance to handle bread, leftovers, pan-shaped food, and occasional air-frying. The available modes and usable interior space are model-specific; check the product specifications and manual. GE describes the range of functions available in its air-fry toaster ovens, while KitchenAid’s explanation of air-frying and oven cooking outlines the intended cooking methods.
Can a toaster oven replace a basket-style air fryer?
Sometimes, but not automatically. An air-fry toaster oven offers a larger, pan-friendly format and other oven functions, while a basket-style machine performed better on crisping and speed in RTINGS’ tested comparison. If you are considering a hybrid, verify that it has a fan and a mesh air-fry basket, then look for independent results for the exact model.

If you already own a convection toaster oven, you may be able to improve airflow without buying another appliance. Whirlpool recommends perforated or low-sided cookware and turning food midway through cooking so more of its surface is exposed to moving air. There is no established universal energy-cost winner between the two categories. Your cost depends on the specific appliance, how long it runs, batch size, preheating behavior, and local electricity rates. Compare model-specific energy information where available and consider how you actually cook; a shorter cycle does not, by itself, prove that one category is always cheaper.

How to choose for your kitchen
- Choose a basket-style air fryer if crisping small batches is your main goal and you do not need the appliance to toast or bake.
- Choose a toaster oven if you regularly toast bread, reheat leftovers, bake, broil, roast, or use a tray or pan.
- Consider an air-fryer toaster oven if you want both functions in one appliance and have room for its larger footprint. Check independent model-specific results and confirm the fan and mesh basket are included.
- Check dimensions before buying if you cook whole foods or use particular pans. Interior shape and usable capacity matter more than a broad category label.
- Read the manual for accessory compatibility, operating instructions, safety, and cleaning for the exact appliance.
Consumer Reports’ indexed buying-guide excerpt cautions that usable capacity can be smaller than a manufacturer’s claim and that toaster-oven hybrids may not produce the very crispest results.
